The size of the domain name has no effect on SEO. However if you're hoping for the exact match bonus, it deteriorates as more words are added to a particular targeted keyword. i.e. targeting "dog food" for the domain dogfood.com is easier than targeting "good dog food" for the domain gooddogfood.com.
That's right, its only good for targeting specific keywords. Having the keyword you target as part of the big domain name helps too. I used Optiontradingpedia.com to target "Option Trading" and it worked.
use how many you need and you can, but remember to take care about tags, H1 2 3, and keyword density in the content. I saw so many perfect domain name in bad position due to poor optimization
