If you manually submit your articles to just one big article directory like ezinedirectories.com will this really help increase your sites pagerank?

The url to ezinedirectories.com in your post looks like the domain is parked.
Article submission can increase your pr but you should not submit your articles
to only 1 article directory if you are trying to improve your pr. It would be wise
to use an article submission service to submit your article to many different directories.

The homepage of some of the article directories may have some pr but in most
cases the page that your article is listed on will not have pr, this page may gain
some pr in the future but it will take some time before it happens.

    I haven't tried Ezinearticles yet.
Is it really effective in increasing pr value?

Instead, what you should be asking is - "how many pages of unique, useful content do I need to add to my own website in order to start seeing a marked increase in PR, rankings for various keywords and traffic?"

That would be a good start.

I have around 80 articles out for one of my websites and even though it increases traffic slightly there is really no PR coming from Ezine or SumContent. Those are two I use since I own SumContent. But Ezine always seems to rank the highest out of the article directories.

Every DoFollow link helps a little bit to increase your PR.
You will need a lot of backlinks so I suggest you to try to build backlinks from various sites, not just article directories.

I used to post articles on Ezine@rticles, but quickly found out that I should be posting on my own website.

The more time you spend writing articles for someone else's website and not your own, the more you are helping the other website grow.

The more content that is relevant to your niche market that you build on your own website, the better off you are.

For instance, you could put an "Articles" section on your website and then write articles on different topics within your niche market. This builds your PR and CAN make your website more search engine friendly... depending on how you construct the content that you write.

If web site content were pennies, would you want more pennies under your url or someone elses?

It should increase your PR only if your articles are in higher PR pages.
On the other hands, make sure these articles are not on your site because it will be seen as duplicate content and you'll drop in SERP...

That's true, but I don't think the OP is competing with http://ezinearticles.com/ :D

No, it won't be seen as duplicate content. That is why you should submit to more than one article directory. Also, one of the best things that could happen is for you to write a great article that gets picked up by a couple hundred other places, not only article directories. That gives you a ton of backlinks which is one of the reasons why you should be writing and submitting 3-5 articles a week.:)
