Okay, I run a gadget blog and need info snap.

Sometimes a product gets promoted in Japan. Great. But when I use several translators I get gibberish back. I don't know what the hell it's saying.

Does anyone have a tool that can translate into several languages and actually be readable?

Altavista uses Babelfish which has been a decent translator from the earlier days.

I know that it isn't the greatest, but it does a good enough job for me to move text around.

    Go to:
    http://www.altavista.com/

You'll see Babel Fish Translation in the center as a text link. Give it a go:)

I'd be interested to hear how well it translates Japanese

I think it is pretty much impossible for an internet server tool/application to correctly translate a page to make it 100% correct - wording and the order in which it is worded in English cannot be translated into another language automatically because the order of the words will stay the same as it is in English but in Japanese it is incorrect.

But if you're just looking for translation in which users can still understand what your web page is saying, definately try out AltaVista's Babel Fish. One of my old hosting clients has used and still uses it on his website Gaming Evolution and it seems to work fine. :)

One of our own users here at Digital Point have developed an open source script that you can use that will translate your web page "on the fly" in various languages. You may want to take a look at that if you're interested in having this type of service/feature hosted on your own server and not a third party's, like AltaVista. You can check out the link to that thread with the open source translation script attached here.

Hope that helps ya out! :)
