This is one of the first signs that the off-shoring benefit is starting to wear off. Now that the emerging markets realise that they can actually get paid more for doing what they do they're equalising the costs across all continents...

Coding is no longer very well paid anywhere because of the fierce competition - you've got to write that killer app to make any real money ;)

You could try a freelance website like this one or try sitepoint.com or namepros.com as someone already mentioned.
In general, you'll have to face stiff competition from India so you won't be able to make as much as you used to make. It's a new world out there.

Another great webmaster website you should checkout is http://www.sitepoint.com it is pretty huge and is more centred around programmers/designers/developers. So sounds like it would fit the bill for you. But your going to face the same competition anywhere so you need to be able to show that your worth paying more for. Its simple economics supply/demand and online there is plenty of supply so there has to be some advantage of working with you if you demand a higher price.

Yeah SitePoint is very good for all thing to do with websites. Because some people are not from AUS, USA and UK. $5.00 is like a days wages to them.

"$5.00 is like a days wages to them." What a BS!

Chandan, once again, you need to invest money for advertising unfortunately. There are lot of (very decent number) of sites who sell services, coding, design, seo, etc. for good prices, but of course they advertise a lot. For example if some person make $3k monthly (very optimistic) at RAC (rentacoder.com), RAC will take 10-15% of that. Which is up to $450!!! With this monthly budget you can make that same $3k and very often more and more. That freelance sites will suck very soon. 5 years ago they were a gem. Today local jobs pay or will pay within year or 2 the same, so why work more stressfull ??!!!

Their financial model based on number of coders and buyers not on quality and well paid jobs. So they will not change anything.

SEOLinker, I agree. It looks like local jobs somewhere (everywhere?) become to pay more than on freelance sites, even in 3rd countries. An interesting trend. Also people tends to move to local businesses because there is less competition. Probably if you know several languages you can benefit from this situation.

And yes, $5/day is not much. Probably it could be spent just on food...

Absolutely, I am from eastern europe and I spend $150 just for food. Rent no less than $250. I am going to serve russian clients from Moscow cause they pay more (!!!) then current USA clients. I've never noticed anyone from my countries here , why ? They don't need to submit to dirs for peanuts, etc.

I can cut my head for bet that by 2010 on that sites will be very few indians, pakistani and eastern europe guys. Probably china and deep asian countries will play role in market. However salaries grows each year in 3rd world and very hard to find someone from IT working for next to nothing.

Freelancer sites? rentacoder.com, guru, elance ? Don't know if they pay more/better than DP though. I have a lot of scripts and ideas already; if you are good at PHP, PM me and maybe we can do something together :)

The problem isn't as much the site you go to when finding work, it's a matter of supply and demand. There are a billion php programmers. It's such a common language that people don't need to pay much for coding in it. To make money, you would need to specialize more. Mainframe programmers, for example, can make as much as $250,000 a year. Why? Because there aren't that many of them. To make money, you must specialize in a desireable, yet fairly unique environment/language.

Learn to code telephony/voIP type applications and you will never starve. If you learn to, I will give you a job.

I have been active in several forums. But none is like DP. Just look at its sheer traffic. My BET is DP is the best forum to earn some money.

    Yeah.
I think they only do it to recieve a rep.
REP means you can charge a higher price.

Namepros.com is run and owned by a known scammer from what my research told me - I can't be 100% sure but my investigation led it to be the same person from California. Now there is a Las Vegas address. I believe this may be the same Ronald James who sold numerous copies of php scripts (php matchmaker, a hot or not script, encoder, etc.) and he encrypted updates to his scripts without the licenseholders knowledge. He shut down his site and all support. He's an arrogant jerk that I wouldn't trust any more than I would have trusted Saddam Hussein. Ronald James ran the site called... prophp.com I believe it was. I remember this specifically because I was one of the people he took for a ride and his condescending, arrogant attitude was a thing of legend. I've also seen experiences with namepros censoring content arbitrarily if they didn't care for it to become public. Use namepros and do business with Ronald James at your own risk.
