Does anyone know how Google ranks images?

I have an idea for printing on mugs, so I went to google images and did a search for "mugs" . It brought back thousands of hits, many of which were very interesting in terms of seeing what has been done, how they handle payments, etc. All the results seem to have "mug" in the url.

Then I searched for Political Mugs and got a whole different set of results. Pretty funny in some cases; got pictures of the staff directory for Allentown Community College. None of the ones I looked at had political mugs in the url so the ranking must be based on page content factors.

Has anyone ever tried to get their pictures to the top in images?

Most of my pictures are at the top of Google's image search. Google scores images based on content of the page/url/text/h1/ and not the image name as a rule. Fixed images in the body of a paragraph will send your pics to the top. However, this works well if your site scores well in organic search. Thumb-nail image pages do well to.
