figured this out finally...got to talking with their tech support and for some reason it took entirely too long for me to convey what the history had been and what was happening - but FINALLY they said - try a soft reset of course I said - reboot that sucka. and wala, the BT communicated perfectly with the Palm and I have been good to go since.
