Yep i saw that. Definitely off topic of thread though. People are more inclined to read the title and want to know about free directories, and wind up coming in and seeing paid. They'll be annoyed and somewhat mislead.
We submit to directories because it helps us to build backlinks. It helps us to gain good ratings from search engines. The main problem with these directory owners are that they will make us sick by sending thousands of emails. Spamming is what we must be wary about. Now regarding traffic we receive good traffic from some directories and no traffic from other directories. Find a directory with high page rank and submit to gain a valuable link
Well if directories are not the way to go and I am working on my content and looking into bookmarking what would you suggest instead?
You can try my directory, recently converted to top list and PPC at once - incoming and outgoing hits added/subtracted from Your rank. Send more hits and You can get good traffic back like websites in this category - http://www.portachi.net/entertainment_news (1-month-old category)
Good free niche directories can and do send traffic and that traffic is highly targeted. The top 10 most popular craft sites on my site Crafty Tips have all received at least 1276 targeted visitors. The top 4 have all seen over 2,000 visitors because of their submissions. The last time I counted 98% of my visitors were non-submitters and most left the site by visiting one or more of the sites listed. If a directory is a quality resource, being free or paid is irrelevant. Granted a huge portion of the garbage masquerading as directories in the Announcements & Solicitations forum are free sites, they do not represent the quality of all free directories. You also have to keep in mind that most of the highly respected directories started out as free submission.
Thanks YMC, proof that they make a difference Does it normally take long for a site to appear on a directory?
What really amazes me is how often this very question has been asked on this very forum. The answers are always the same... Low traffic, serps boost... With a huge forum like this it would simply make more sense to "search"... But then again, "sense" has lost its meaning in recent times and has been replaced with "bushism". No offense to the OP by the way...
Ah fair enough, I never found a niche directory for my site, it's mostly about Stirling Engines so I suppose it's just a general science and technology section
I try to get links from all over. My linking portfolio is very diverse. Be really careful about your link building to adsense sites. If your CTR is extremely low, adsense will start paying you .01/click. TomG.
I just looked up ctr there and i see people saying they got banned for having a high ctr %, i dont think mine will be too much, it's currently 1.16% but just as a matter of interest, can you get banned for this and why? Also how high is the limit?
The only reason anyone ever uses directories is because they are trying to build backlinks. Only SE's such as Google are frowning on directories now and most of the directories are PR0-PR1 so they're only going to drag you down anyway. I am willing to bet that any traffic that trickles from any directory- free or paid- brings ZERO or just above zero in income to the site owner, so it's just fluff traffic- worth nothing. Maybe it's worth doing a case study on it.
i dont get traffic from free directories, even if i did it would most likely not be targeted traffic and wont translate into sales.
? game person taking a bet, traffic that trickles ? zero or just above income / fluff traffic There are to many variables in that statement, Even if a directory sent you in the 100's of hits it would not guarantee sales for one, there is layout, ads , products, pricing, and numerous other variables at play, to dismiss traffic as fluff some need to look and the fluff n puff they have on their site first, it's to easy to make general statements.
I hate people who leave a negative rep without writing their name as well Why do you hide? The truth is harsh sometimes, try to accept it! A few anonymous negative reps won't change anything.
