There was an interesting post by John Scott about the way most webmasters complain about getting few hits from directories, but fail to optimise their submissions with adequate descriptions and keywords. So I wonder, what does it really take to be in that 40%? With all your data, I suppose you would be in a good position to analyse this.

Is getting listed at the top of a category more useful than having a full list of relevant keywords? Or is the main criteria being in a popular category that interests a lot of visitors? Have most of the 40% bought premium listings?

Directorys are not for geting traffic
Are for geting backlinks => rankings => Traffic
If they didn't provide traffic, they are not high pr
so the backlinks have little value.

I don't get any traffic from directories. As my submissions are free regular listings they are very low in the listing page. If you buy featured links you might get some traffic

Directories listings are known mostly for PR help. They will mainly help you to increase your site PR. They will also help you rank better on search engines for your specific keywords. Although they can bring you direct traffic to your site, you shouldn't rely on them for a significant one. They usually don't send many visitors directly unless you pay for your website to be featured( more visible).

PR is a problem which has spawned a messy mass of directories that are looking for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It cant last and we are already seeing a move in that direction.

Niche directories however do generate traffic and whats more its targetted traffic. These are the real drectories. Ones which have a dedicated webmaster sitting behind them and visitors who know why they are there. Forget about the rest they only exist because they count as back links and if we dont kill off PR mania soon the chances are that Goggle we pull the plug on all.

Actually it is true that directory submissions are mainly for PR pass. But remember that a directory submission with the right page title may bring you some traffic because your detail page can reach a place where your page itself cannot reach.

Here is an example. One of the detail pages of my directory ranks #11 for this search: http://www.google.com/search?q=wardrobe+malfunction+pictures&hl=en&start=10&sa=N And that website is not anywhere near #11 and it has got 25 visitors from me in 2 days. I know that is not too much, but maybe encouraging for a directory submission? Just think the results when your detail page shows in the 1st page for an important keyword.

    Thanks for reading mates.
