Does anyone else find that....

I've been making websites for nearly 5 years, and last year i decided to become financially independant on them, something i have now achieved.
But it's very difficult for friends and family to accept this, like you know "it's not a real job" or they think i'm doing something illegal.

The recent trend seems to be to try and hook me up with potential employers, something i certainly don't need.
Does this happen to anyone else?

    :)

I don't get any hassle for working online. Not that it comes up that often as i'm also at university, so it doesn't really come up often in conversation, people are more interested that i'm a student than that.

But anyway, why care what other people think so much? If they want to think your doing something illegal then so be it, the fact is your not.

Yeah, people I know don't really know about making money online, even though I tell them I do they don't really "believe" it.

Next time anybody asks what I do to make money online I'll just say I do webcam strip shows, hopefully that'll be the end of them asking me stuff about it :D

Andy, this response is symptomatic of people who don't know anything about the digital realm in general. As a married man for the last five years, my relationship has endured stresses and strains connected to my pursuit of earning a living through the internet. I get the same thing from friends and family who'd rather settle for making some fat pain-in-the-arse richer while they're paid disproportionately what they're worth and looking forward to a fantasy-time of retirement and enjoying their lives post-work. Andy, DO NOT BUDGE! Dig deeper and harden your resolve - get nasty if you have to, because it would be a shame to give in to societal pressures (mandated from the top of the power chain to keep you mentally enslaved) when you might only be inches from winning. Besides, the very people who are hassling you now will be the ones running to you either looking for a hookup, handout, or will try to guilt you into setting up something for them without any investment of their time and effort. DO NOT BUDGE. STAY ON TARGET. And you do decide to try to "get a job"(ecch!), use the skills you have since they're highly marketable and search online extensively (if you need a hand with some resources - talk to me). DO NOT BUDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try saying that you pretend to be a girl who makes chat online instead and look at their reactions :)

If you're making decent money form your online ventures, tell them to fu*k off. Simple as that.

Too many people can't understand when people are adventurous enough to think outside of the bubble and climb above the rat race. They rather cast their negative and ill informed opinions on others when they know nothing of life themselves.

It's negative people like that which spawn miserable lifes for themselves in a dead end job until they're six feet in the ground sharing a bed with the worms.

Well i'm at university, and without going into specifics, i'm making more than enough to pay my fees and living allowances, but everyone seems to think i need a job. It doesn't bother me, i was just wondering if other people have these experiences :)

Hi Andy, until I read your post I thought I was the only person who was facing such.. shall I say, criticism. People ask me what I do and I often opt to say nothing, because if I say I work online, I get a billion questions followed by a 'but aren't going to get a real job?' I think it will be better for us in the long term.. we don't have a boss to answer to, no pressure to work (unless the bills for house rentals are pending) and we work for ourselves. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Yea, I recently had to quit my daytime job to help take care of my father-in-law who has Alzheimer's. I make all my money on the Internet now. My in-laws think it is great but have no clue how I can money on line. My brothers and sisters think I just do nothing and need to get a job. People ask what I do when we go out and I tell them and they say so you don't have a job right now are you looking?

The key is, I am happy, my wife is happy and we make enough between us to pay the bills and have some fun money. Who cares what people think!

I think even though my dad feels it can be a waste of time, he realizes now that I am profitting that the work is paying off. I am pretty proud to say that I have a family that supports my online endeavours as they didn't originally when I was simply spending so much time at the computer.

Haha, funny thread. I encounter the same situation after every big domain name sale. The first question friends and family ask is, 'Is that legal?'

I started making websites only few months ago but I can already see that I'm going the right direction. But my family also doesn't understand it. They keep telling me it is unsecure and illegal even though they don't even know what being a webmaster means. It's difficult to explain to them...

I hope that sometimes in future I will be earning online enough to cover all my financial needs. I'm currently also at university and so far I'm not earning online enough to pay for everything I need but taking into consideration I jumped into this business just few months ago, I'm already pretty successful.

Not that I make all that money online but my family doesn't understand where the cash comes from and deem it as a waste of time.
