That's exactly what I came here (today) to find out. If you build it and give it a good name I think there's more chance they'll come - and before anyone says it - you add original content.

Exactly....they say myspace was NOT purely Viral though

    http://www.startup-review.com/blog/myspace-case-study-not-a-purely-viral-start.php

So the question still remains....If you BUILD IT, Will they come, or do you need a large marketing budget????

Back in time when I used to develop an application I do not want to mention here (it's not piracy or anything related to that, I just do not want to give the name of the application for personal reasons), I used to get thousands of visitors per day on a website and about 30% of them would register on the forums and start posting.
The application was unique and that has proven to me that content is the key to a website success.

I believe if you make a good site, yes, over time it will work it's self out. However, the best site in the world means nothing without some traffic.

So if the question is, make a good site and wait on customers, no. That will not work. You still have to market and promote the site just like you would do in any real life business. Online or not.

    Good luck.

Walmart, Mcdonalds, Bestbuy and all the rest of those big companies have no doubt built it and people have came and are still coming yet these big companies still seem to advertise because they realize that as big as they are advertising remains the key ingredient to their business platform because witbout it they would surely fail.

I believe it works, if people spent more time focusing on content versus getting links to "light" sites IN THE LONG RUN they will be better off. I think BOTH need to be done to have short term and long term success though.

If you build it, be sure you built it right. If you built it right, market it. If you market it, they will come. That's what I believe.

No matter how much effort you put into building it, without marketing, your domain is just as popular as asldfkjswerqoiuerowqiureowlskjfas.com

    No such thing.
Just imagine if you develop a service that people don't need although its a unique idea such as selling ice at Antarctica.
So who gonna buy your ice?

    No longer true.

You must build it, optimize it, market it and then they will come.
