Common sense is not so common.

Otherwise you would not have millions of suckers playing the lotto twice a week. Infomercials. Among countless other get rich quick schemes.

Many people have to accept the reality that making money requires WORK.

As long as you're wasting your money on e-books, you are propelling your income downwards.

The only thing e-books are good for is making money for the people who sell them to suckers.

If the techniques actually worked, and enough detail was presented to actually be able to implement them, then it would not be rational to sell them. People who know how to make money are keeping it to themselves. The best thing you can do is go out and actually observe what is being done by people who have large operations, because those people are most likely re-investing actual revenue into growing their business.

You have your own websites in your own hands, this isn't the case with the lottery. I understand your example, I understand what you mean, I'm just giving out some tips ;)

People who typically say this comment are not even working in the industry(s) full time. They are the same people who say, "Why would anyone buy porn when you can get it on tubes for free?", or, "Why would anyone buy a celebrity site membership when you can get it for free?". There are people who do not have a clue about marketing, or selling and you should steer clear of them. No offense to the O.P.. I simply quoted his remark out of convenience.

Secondly, if this were true. You would not have people like ShoeMoney offering his ShoeMoney System to 500 people at $200.00 a month. You would not have industry conferences that people pay $300.00+ in badge fees and travel expenses to go to, and learn new techniques and tricks to stay ahead of the curve. You would not have trade magazines or podcasts, and radio stations that thrive like....

    http://www2.webmasterradio.fm/
    http://www.sin20.com/podcast

..or the chat rooms that some offer that are always packed with people sharing advice and tips to help one another.

The point being, defer to rule number one when getting advice on any WM board out there....

"Do you actually work online full time?"

    ;)

I wasn't bashing you my friend. Was simply quoting you out of convenience to make a point to the original O.P.. It's all good bud. Carry on.

It seems to me that most people who make a lot of money online are the ones who teach others how to make money online . Sounds like one giant loop. These are mostly the internet marketers and can always be traced back to a handful of people. The only reason they make money online is because people pay THEM to tell them how they sold their seminar/DVD/Ebook to them!!

I think the best thing to do is get a job out of college then just dabble into different things instead of getting into a stupid IRA or 401(k). Those things are ripoffs. Instead, try something new and dont be afraid to "lose" a few hundred or thousand dollars. If you are going to invest in anything I want a TANGIBLE thing that can sell. I dont want advice or a how to guide. You can get that for free by doing a search

People pay others who have experience and proven success making money online just as they would for any other business with a lot of money invested. Although, 'a lot of money' can be relative to the individual. When a people are investing thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars. It is a no brainer to pay someone for consulting in that regards when you have a significant amount of money on the line.

Additionally, not everyone wants to waste countless hours reading for free and trying to find out who and what is bullshit for 6-18 months. Wasting time and resources on trial, error, and tracking before being forced back to the drawing board again and again. They want to see a ROI in the shortest possible time frame.

Those with money can afford that luxury when it comes to making money online.

True, if you can afford that luxury then obviously no big deal

My buddy had forwarded me some programs that people paid a few grand for. I learned absolutely nothing. It was one of the top internet marketers in the world. It just seems like one big loop to me.

The only question I have is do these guys make money online by telling others how to make money online or have they actually started their own online business that had nothing to do with telling others how to make money online. Sure, they exist but they seem to be few and far between imo

    Amen toe dat!

It is one thing to have done it, have solid experience in that market, you can show results, and the offer to others. It is another if you have never done it and can't point to any success to show you have a clue you know what you are talking about.

As for your, and buddy's, experience. I am sure there are plenty of those things out there. I know myself, just reading the boards and free advice given to a lot of noobs,... a lot of it is complete bullshit! It is also obvious that a good chunk of it is being posted by people who've never done it in the first place.

It reminds me of some of the webmaster boards where some part time domainer is talking about content production, high traffic networks, hosting and so forth like they know everything about everything. One you get into the Q&A about some of the subjects, it is clear they do not know what they are talking about.

That would be a prime example of what you are talking about, and what you see on the boards all the time.

Anyway, back to the O.P. and their initial question....

I used to make money writing content for a few different websites, but they aren't around anymore, so I got a job at Burger King.

Decided to quit a year and a half later, and found that people looking for short articles are much like the people who order food at BK, they want their product fast and cheap. The only difference is that writing is less greasy and doesn't require a 10 mile commute to work everyday.

I could make about the same amount of money doing that as I would at Burger King if I spent enough time doing it.

I think one thing people NEVER mention when it comes to making money online is TIMING

Sure, someone could come up with a great business idea, market it well and do this that and the otherthing and then start teaching you how to have success like himself but what about the timing? What he did worked at THAT particular time. Usually, in a lot of industries or niches it seems (not all but a lot) it seems that the people who first break onto the scene will reap the rewards

the truth is that therer are many ways to earn online, adsense, affiliate marketing, cpa offers, ebay, etc. But it's actually up to you. If you are an expert in something you can create a product and promote it through affilaite marketing. As for me, the fastest and the easiest way to start is with just affiliate marketing, you've got high quality products to promote and you also have a great chance to have affiliates to promote your stuff. :) ok. :) good luck check out the links below. you'll not regret it. :)

    Well said! :)

That's what I've noticed too, most of the "how to get rich on the internet" type of products are just about making more "how to get rich on ther internet" products, one big loop alright, complete load of crap, and there's heaps of it out there.

It reminds me back in the early 90's , my dad bougth this little green book and it was called something like "how to make a million dollars!" ... I was intrigued at a young age as to what this book would say, so I had a read most of the pages were empty and double line spacing was used, so the actual content was aobut 1/2 or less of a normal sized book.
It basically said you write a book called "how to make a million bucks" and then sell it to other suckers! LOL. What a scam.

I genuinely think the way to do it and I'm just starting to dabble myself is by selling real products and real content/information that will enrich peoples lives. AT the end of the day that's why a product grows and sells, people want something to genuinely improve their lives.

    Pete.

From what I can see, people who say this are the same people I've observed saying other rational, sensible things here.

I work online full time and I'm pretty sure I earn more than 99% of the people on DP. I am happy to share general advice and beat people over the head with the common-sense stick but I don't give away detailed specifics because it just leads to people undercutting my income.

I could take the stuff I currently write in here in my bitter, sarcastic tone, repackage it with an upbeat, can-do air, and sell it in an e-book that would be just like the other crap out there. I don't because it feels cheap and sleazy.

Of course you would have these things. They are all part of the ecosystem that preys on the ignorant with dreams of internet riches beyond their wildest dreams, but delivers nothing. Shoemoney, if the numbers are to believed, is raking in tens of thousands in exchange for pap and tautologies, and people are eager to pay him. Easy money.

Yet, ShoeMoney is also a featured speaker at a lot of mainstream online industry conferences and a mod here at DP and you're not.

Anyway... enough bickering about semantics. People can ask to see stats of those who claim this or that. Including sales, SEO, and other things before doing business. They can see, with minimal effort, who are on panels at industry conferences. Who get interviewed by the industry and their peers. Among countless other things to fact check who not only know what they are talking about, and get recognized by their respective industry. It takes a lot more than a sheep following to get asked to be on a panel, or get interviewed by industry.

Getting back to the O.P. topic,... "Do people actually make money online"....

    Carry on.

It is very hard to earn money online. I think without an investment (hosting, domain, script, etc.) you can't earn money.

I find it hard to earn some money online and to save some for beer :D

I earned a few Euros with Daisycon.com but I didn't gain any profit (expensive hosting).
Then I switched to Adsense and it took me 7 months to receive my $100 then I was banned a month later. I made that money with a RapidShare Premium Link Generator. I suggest to host a script like that.

Tomorrow I will receive my latest money from Bidvertiser ($17). Now I have nothing left. I'm looking full-time to find a new profitable business. I hope you will find a business too!

I was looking to resell hosting but there are so many on the WWW. But I will buy a .com this year to start a fresh business. I don't know yet what kind of business.

I don't understand why that makes you think he (or anyone else earning money in the how-to-make-money-online business) is providing people with the detailed knowledge required to earn online.

He is providing people with the good feeling that anything is possible, that if they apply the magic formula they will be holding up $130,000 Adsense cheques on their own blogs too.

This is a more potent and compelling draw than teaching people the realities of the matter, which involve a lot of hard work, drudgery, and a bit of luck as well.

Nope, because I'm not in the feel-good business. He's found a successful niche, good for him. It's not what I want to do. Nevertheless I am able to keep my eyes open and critically evaluate what goes on.

Yes, but reading e-books didn't get them there.

Yep, well said. Rep given :)

By and large, ebook sellers are like those selling spades to the gold diggers.
Most of the tips are too general and do not give away much and you also cannot say they are wrong. Like general statements such as "You can make money if you work hard and lots of effort into it" :D
Agree with you that, the real money makers are UTR. :)
