Hi, Great DP members... Does anyone know how the name Pentium come for the Computer Processor Giants.. I have read up this in a magazine. I feel to share it here.
At the early time when Intel introduces its chips, it named with just numbers as I286,386 and 486 continuously, after 486 the oncoming chip has been decided with a name I586 and planned to get a Trademark(TM) for the same. The reason is the other manufactures like AMD named thier chip as AMD 486.
But American courts(Laws) banned to get a Trademark for numbers for a private organization or company. So Intel asked "Lexicon" organisation to get them a name. Lexicon suggested the name "PENTIUM".
In Latin "Pente" mean Five and "ium" mean a neuter, a common noun.
Thus the name PENTIUM assigned for the Intel chips.
