Does altering whois info affect rankings?

I've recently purchased a site with decent rankings in a rather competitive market. I'm a little worried about changing the whois info as I've heard rumors that this could damage the rankings. Has anyone had any experience with this?

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,

I don't have any direct experience with this issue, but based on what I've read in the forums, changing the whois info should not affect the rankings of a site. :)

A friend pushed a domain name of his to my account and placed me as technical contact. No change in ranking whatsoever.
