Does "alt" in image link equate to anchor text?

    If I use image links, and give the image a keyword name like "alt=widget", does that anyway equal what SE's consider anchor text?

    I suppose nobody gives you clear answer regarding this.
    If you can, use rather text links.
    If you cannot use text links, sure do not forget the ALTs, it will not hurt your SEO, it can only help.
