I am sorry if this was posted in the wrong board, I did not know where to correctly post it. One of my blogs has an Alexa ranking of 386,690. Does the Alexa rank actually mean anything? I have watched my ranking go from 2,000,000 to 386,690 Since January and I'm very pleased with that but wondered what it means.
A lower alexa rank is important. It does help with rankings in the search engines. There are different opinions about how important they are. The alexa ranking is essentially a ranking about traffic and the lower ranking the better. It's also important for selling advertising also. My site went from 12,000,000 down to 3,600,000 in like a month and a half so thats good! Lower the better!
Are you talking about traffic wise? Then, no, it does not mean a thing. You can have a site with, say, 10,000 daily visitors, and it has little rank. And vice versa.
I think alexa is a crock of poo frankly.. it is completely skewed.. but the thing is if you sell private advertising.. then those advertisers hold alexa in high regard... so you need to try and increase your rankings.. Its the same thing if you want to sell you site as well.. people do look at alexa rankings as well. Its a crap double edged sword...
I use Alexa as an estimate. You can tell if the website gets heavy traffic or not by looking to see if the website is in the 300k's or below. You also have to look at what niche the website is in too as if it is internet/webmaster it will have a lower rank without as much traffic, etc.
It means very little as far as generating income and traffic as far as I can see. I own several sites and the one I make the most money with (over 300.00 USD a day) has a ranking around 900,000. The one that has the best ranking (around 77,000) makes only a few dollars a day. Traffic for the first one is close to 1,500 UV daily abd the second one is about 400UV daily. Since I operate the sites to earn a living, I could give a flip about the alexa rankings.
Alexa is spyware. Anything having to do with spyware is bad. To answer your question, some people think that because this spyware gives a rank to a certain page, that its important. The fact is, Alexa is overrated and is not accurate.
If anything, I think alexa rankings ARE less accurate than they used to be. The alexa stats for many of my sites hold absolutely no relation to their success or otherwise.
Alexa can be inaccurate in my opinion, but some search engines (and link directories) tend to favor a site with a higher Alexa ranking...
My website has a higher Alexa ranking than the #1 for my keyword. Still, my site stabilized at #11. I don't think search engines care a lot about Alexa ranking. Or Alexa ranking just isn't accurate.
when your ranking is lower you can get much advertisers for your site because they think it is a tool to know your traffic ranking with pr in search engines . so if your rank in 100 k that looks better than 300 k . i use review sites , and they don't send me paid reviews if my site's rank in alexa and google not good . also technorati
Alexa is worthless and over-hyped. The only time your rank is important is when you are trying to sell a site to snooty buyers who think it's important.
Yes, I also agree with all these statements: in terms of visits and SERPS, Alexa ranking doesn't matter too much. However, many advertisers tend to look at the Alexa ranking before making a purchase or an offer so a better placing is welcomed. However, since it is quite easy to improve your Alexa ranking (since they use that bar to catalog visits), it doesn't generally mean too much.
Some people shit a brick if a site is not in the top 100,000. Personally I find Alexa to be insulting. I don't think it's important.. But as the posters above have said. It's mostly advertisers that throw the biggest fit about the number. I'm currently sitting at 882,752. And it's dropping by the day.. My secret? I have no worries about it. Trust me take it with a grain of salt and let it come naturally
Alexa will hold some position for web directories.. but for blogs.. i dont think so Alexa is really crap ..
Amen! I see so many people using there Alexa rank as selling points and it's utter BS. Alexa is overrated means absolutely nothing and nor does it give any weight in where you rank in the SERPS or judge how much revenue the site is making or how much an advertiser could make. The sick thing is that private advertisers do look at this as an buying point. Hell I may as well go out build an sh!tty website run an few BH scripts get my rank to less than 1,000 and while I'm at it inflate my PR temporary and charge advertisers 500 / month for an single link spot. It's an good thing I'm str8 up and would never stoop that low but am 100% sure it's going around has been going around and it's going around here at DP.
