Does age matter for SEO, or is it just PR?

    Hi,
I was wondering, my site is quite new, and isn't ranking very high in Google for anything. Is this to do with the fact that my site is new, or do I just need more backlinks?
    Thanks.

Age helps, but since there isn't anything you can do about that, keep working on links :)

I would guess it needs more backlinks BECAUSE it is new... have you applied all of your SEO-Fu Grasshopper? Done all of the on-site work et al?

The tighter the onsite work, the less back links you will ultimately need to rank.. it all help ye know...

Oh and for the record - PR ( at least the toolbar variety) means VERY little... an actual PageRank itself has been devalued substantially over the last few years... just so ya know!
    :)

PR doesn't mean anything unless you want to sell links. Even then, I don't think age matters as much as some people say because I had a few new sites rank quite well when I first started. I developed links on a steady basis though. I didn't get them all in one day. And I mainly focused on updating with good content regularly.

    Indeed!
The age of the domain would help.

    AFAIK,the more backlinks (relevant,high quality),the better.

DO some links exchange and put your signature link here at DP to have some back link. If your site is new, you tend to live in the sandbox (those high competitive keyword) but you still can see your uncompetitive keyword if you have a good content and google already index your site.

So my suggestion>> work on the contend and get back link at the same time.

The age of the site does matter a lot PR wise. But the age of a site and domain does not really matter that much in google rankings. It takes a lot more than age to rank high in google.

    I'm getting confused now!

He was talking about the age of him or the age of the site? I couldn't find a clue in his post!:(

    age definitely matters.

Google isn't going to rank a brand new site in the top results out of XX million. But one of my sites, which is 3 years old, ranks very high for ouch niche. Age does matter.

    Grand,

I would think backlinks with a new site. Links from the right places (topical) are to me popularity votes. More links -- the more votes. I've seen too many new sites with viral content, videos, pics or widgets rank well fast. Seems to be because of the amount of unreciprocated links to that page or site.
