This is an interesting question. I cannot tell you from my personal experience that I've been able to see a connection, though I know others that have sworn that throwing ads (especially adsense) on a page can have a negative effect on rankings.

No one says that ads affect the SE ranking in negative way. They are part of the content and if they are relevant to this content, that means they are useful for any website visitors. The talk is that Google tolerates websites that display ads from AdSense but this is sounds like a conspiracy theory. At the same time most of the leading websites display Google ads as additional resource... often on the bottom of their pages.

If you are putting your ad out there with adwords, I am sure, somewhere deep down, that google gives you a little credit for it. But there is no way to prove it.

Well, This is interesting question.. But I personally think these adverts does affect SERPs.. Its very simple reason ..

Adverts contain javascripts, which increase the ratio of code to text and it takes time to load the page.. So i think it does.. but it affects only 0.1% .. its not a major issue

all I know is that ads are only for traffic. but I think if you put an adsense google may consider it and give you a credit increasing your SERPs.

Google is not giving any special under-the-counter favours to you if you either put adsense on your blog, or have an adwords account. If they did, it would
    a)be an impossibly corrupt system
    b) pointless of anyone to do it without telling you - where's the incentive if you don't know they're doing it?

If you're having trouble getting indexed it may help, as although the adsense and adwords bots are different from the search engine bot, there is a 'relationship' between them. But putting a link on an often-crawled page is a surer bet.
