I've had about pages picked up by the search engines and rank very well. So why not?

The more you optimize your site including all pages, the better chances to rank well in search engines. Yeah i think you should optimize "about" page too.

Yes, All the pages should be optimized properlly to get traffic.
If entire page is optimized, that will be more helpful to get traffic via search engines :)

yes optimise it, but remember that the about page is ther to say to your visitors "I am legitimate" and if its readin weird then it isnt convincing for them!

When using WordPress the first thing I do with a new site is delete the 1st hello post and the about me page.

I delete the about me page since it's not got an optimised url (I could edit it manually, but just as easy to start from scratch), if I'm going to have an about type page on a site I'll optimise it completely.

I've gone by the nickname SEO Dave on Usenet and a few forums, I have number 1 in Google (actually 1, 2 and 3 are mine) and it's the about page for one of my sites that's number 1. It was originally with the filename about since it was my first WordPress site and didn't think to change it all those years ago, later changed it and added a 301 redirect from about to what it is now.

Not a hard SERP or traffic SERP by any means, but if you are going to have a page make it count for something, someone searches for my AKA they find my site and two other sites I posted at.

It doesn't hurt to optimise, does it?

Make sure your about page looks professional though- it is one of the factors that helps in conversion.

I agree. You should optimize every page on your site. You can optimize your About page towards other keywords you want to promote on the site. Every page helps.
