I got an email from a site who wanted to trade links with one of my sites, but they're offering me a link on a flash page rather than an html link. I guess that that sort of link - while useful for people browsing - will not be read by search engines, am I right???

You are exactly correct. The search engine crawlers do not parse flash content. That's the main thing that is preventing flash from taking over the web. It's a cool tool, but it's a liability as far as SEO is concerned.
yeah search engines dnt crawl images. i mean the text hidden in images(alt tags) is not read by the search engines. so its just a wastage
