Not necessarily a huge increase of backlinks would leave negative effect such a drop in ranking. It's could be other factors as well which the freelancer did not make known to you like the person just left spammy links on a bunch of unrelated sites. Just run through a backlink check to find out.
I don't think 20+ posts means growing too fast. You should make sure you are not adding crap to wherever you make posts. Quality matters to google atleast.
Google claims they will not penalize sites for backlinks, but I'm sure these cases are flagged for human review. If it's an obvious attempt to manipulate the SERPS, Google will act. I've knocked sites from page one to page 99 getting links too quickly. Trust me, it can be done.
I am agree Quality is better than Quantity....if you get quality backlinks then it's good but they are spammy or others they will not get any weight in search engines..i think that SEO guy used some Blackhat methods to get these links in short period....
I am not sure not I personally think that getting lot of backlinks can not hurt a site ranking because if backlinks could hurt, then people would build thousands of backlinks for their competitors in order to get them penalized. The worst that can happen is that google will ignore all the quickly build backlinks, that is, google will not give your site any credit for such links.
Google does not like that many backlinks at once, it sees them as unnatural, you also have to think about where the links came from. Are they from sites that have content that is relevant to your content or are they just random links from ill assorted sites.? Google want to see websites growing naturally over time, thus establishing a solid reputation as a reliable business that is here for the long haul, and that cannot happen overnight, it takes months if not years. Can you please let me know who build these links for you? I want to hire someone to build links for my site. Thanks a lot!
Is the general consensus then that Google will find you out, and that it is clever enough to largely determine the genuine sites and links as opposed to those that try an manipulate the rankings?
I wonder about that "unnatural", because in the real world, legitimate links do come fast and all at once, then slow down again example, a site comes up with a new funny picture or story, someone notices it and links it, everyone sees that and thinks it is funny so they link it to right away, so you see alot of links in a few days...... then the story or picture gets old and people stop linking it again
Yeah thats a great point, thats what I was thinking. It seems pointless for Google to penalize sites because sites could easily publish some great content which everyone wants to link to.
I don't believe that Google staff are stupids, and am also sure they won't allow any website owner to eliminate other competitive websites simply by hiring a freelance SEO to build huge linking campaign for a specific keyword and using only one anchor text, there is so many factors Google consider before applying any kind of penalties to any particular site! However am sorry to hear that, and hope you will recover soon
i suspect you got penalized. some directory sites stress building links slowly at only 10 links per day. this looks more natural and "organic" i suppose. i personally try to build at least 1 link a day when i'm lazy and if i'm not then 20 links max per day. this is not based on my experience but just warnings i keep reading from various sites.
Well it really all depends. It mainly depends on the age of your domain, because 22,000 backlinks in a month or two is not uncommon for large sites or sites which have newsworthy content. If your site was published in top online newspapers then its possible to gain a vast amount of links in a short time. If you domain is more than 2 years old then the penalty is lessened and you may not have the negative effects associated with link disease (lol). If the links generated are from bad neighborhoods then you will have hell to pay. It is likely that if all checks out your website ranking will be restored, at this period I am sure Google algorithm has flagged your website and is making sure the vast amount of new links are legitimate and worthy before ranking is restored. Give it at least 45 days before pulling out your hair.
I think you need to go back tot he person who obtained the links for you and go into detail how he did it. I tmay be something he has done unintentionally has had the negative effect. Also I'd suggest since he is supposed to be improving your ranking if you haven't paid him don't until he fixes the problem if you have then ask for compensation. However bear in mind it could be for a completely different reason that you have lost your rank. Without doing anything one of my sites went from no 5 on google.com to page 10 but at the same time appeared on the first page of google.co.uk. Can't explain why but I'm still making money so I'm not worrying too much. Paul
We are an 8 year old domain. We have very few back links. I have recently started doing lots of link building including .edu links (8 so far) and directory submission to directory lists I found on this site. I would assume that if the directory has a category relevant to my product, then it is a good neighborhood? What would make a directory bad? And so far, we are averaging about 60-100 directory submissions per day. Is that to many???? Michael
