    What makes you think that counts as 2 links?

    Google has proved itself to be rather good at duplicate content filtering. I highly doubt that they give a listing from DMOZ and the same listing in the feed Google takes from DMOZ double credit.

    Recognizing those links and counting them as 3 "votes" are two different things.

    I have noticed that my DMOZ listing has already been duplicated in the Alexa Directory ... literally within hours!

    The Google Directory updates from the Open Directory roughly monthly (with occasional gaps.) Not to be confused with updating the PR display in the Google Directory, which happens on a different schedule.

    Last two updates of the directory were December 23rd and around February 19th. So you see there was a gap in January. But still the next update would be expected around March 20th, based on a Dmoz data dump made perhaps three weeks earlier.

    But I wouldn't expect too much from the Google Directory. I don't think it really makes a lot of difference to Google SERPs.

    It hasn't been that regular for about 3 years, give or take. It isn't even close to monthly any more - more like somewhere between 2 and 4 times per year, or in other words when they feel like it.

    There certainly was a change in 2003. From 2000 to 2002 Google updated from Dmoz every month. Then in 2003 there was a big gap. There were no updates between May and October. Then an update in November was followed by a gap until March 2004.

    The cause has never been announced publically, but is assumed to be a problem in parsing the Dmoz rdf dump, due to errors caused by varied character sets for different languages. When the ODP moved over to Unicode, these problems were resolved. Google then returned to a roughly monthly schedule, but there have been gaps. Here's a list of updates over the last 18 months:

    October 18th 2004
    November 14th 2004
    December 17th 2004
    January 18th 2005
    <unexplained gap>
    March 5th 2005
    <gap caused by Dmoz failure to release a new rdf>
    May 25th 2005
    June 27th 2005
    July 27th 2005
    <unexplained gap>
    September 11th 2005 <updated with rdf from around July 27/8>
    October 21st 2005 <updated with rdf from around October 13>
    December 23rd 2005 <updated with rdf from around December 3>
    February 19th 2005 <updated with rdf from around January 27th>

    As you can see, the pattern suggests an attempt to return to monthly updates, but with some hitches. However updates have been every two months since last October, so it is possible that Google has shifted to a new schedule.

    Naturally they do it when they feel like doing it. That's a given. They run their business their way. I'm trying to be a bit more informative here.

    So am I. This reminds me of the numerous threads on "when is the next PR update?" and the various sites that claim to have data that "predicts" the next update:

    1. there is no good way to predict an event that is irregular or occurs at the whim of Google rather than on any set schedule - I don't believe it is at all accidental that Google moved away from regular updates of the directory (which includes PR graphs) or Toolbar PR - as Matt Cutts has stated, they did it because they felt there was far too much "PR watching" in the webmaster community

    2. whenever exactly the updates occur, they do not affect one's Google rankings one iota, since anything that those updates reflect or are related to has already been factored into the Google rankings - you will not see any increase in ranking or traffic or income as a result of the update having occurred

    3. very soon after the update has occurred, it becomes out of date again until the next update, as Google continues to update the actual data that yields the Google rankins on an ongoing basis ("everflux")

    Statements that suggest greater regularity in updates than actually exists or that fail to remind new webmasters that the updates themselves are trivial do not, in my opinion, provide a benefit to anyone.

    Updates of displayed PR, whether in the directory or on the toolbar, are a completely separate issue. Displayed PR is not updated at the same time that the directory updates from Dmoz.

    Google never did update from Dmoz on an absolutely regular-as-clockwork schedule. It always updated roughly once a month. Technical hitches can explain the biggest gap in that schedule and probably the rest of the gaps.

    But anyway I have given the list of dates, so people anxiously awaiting the appearance of their listing in the Google Directory can judge for themselves when it might arrive.

    If the latter is true, then the former must also be true... isn't that how it works?

    Personally, I've not noticed much of a difference.

    There's really no way to answer this question unless you gauge your traffic right before and right after you get added.

    I think your PR as wells as SERP will be boosted though you still need other inbound links.
