Does 404 error redirect cause a site ban?

    I have change the content of my old site and now all those all pages are gone... to avoid error page appear I decided to put a 404 redirect in my .htaccess. I want to know if this cause my site to be ban in search engine

    404 is "document not found", not a redirect.

    Assuming you mean a custom error page: what are you going to put on it? Some unique text with a link to your homepage or something like a second sitemap (not recommended by me)?
