Does 2 domains pointing to one site affect SEO? I mean, I wish to buy .org, .net and .info versions of my .com domain. Does that affect my SEO? Somebody please help!
If you are hosting all these on the same C-class IP address then it doesnt help with your seo efforts if you're interlinking one site to another (.org with .com) etc. But there is no 'penalty' or anything like that.
Hi sippsin, Do you mean that both domains will be showing exactly the same site? I mean you actually build only one website and point both domains to that one site? If yes, then it would affect SEO because google sees the two domains as different sites and will treat them as having duplicate content. But there is a way to get around this and that is by putting in a 301 redirect on one of the domains. The 301 redirect will forestall any duplicate content penalties. Hope that helps
Make sure you do your 301 redirects to avoid duplicated content. The domain name that you use to show up in SERPS will be the only one that affects your rankings. If you use a couple of keywords in your domain name, it will help you in SERPS but only the domain name that you use. The other domain names you have pointing to the website will not affect rankings.
There is no use of more domains for same purpose. If you would like to improve ranking at search engine then you need to do good ethical search engine optimization work. Generally 301 redirection is used to point one address only. Otherwise, there would be mirror websites for one website and this is not useful for any point of view. Even you can be penalize at all major search engine.
Yes exactly. I have read this somewhere. But just wanted to discuss this. 301 is a temporary redirect right? yes, you are right. now I remember.. Temporary redirect wont affect SEO. I have read it in Google docs. One more question. Can I but these domains from different hosting providers? like .org, .info, .net - each from different providers. Why i need this is, I recently had some issues with my hosting provider. I was afraid if they shut down my site due to some arguments between us, then I wont be even able to tell my visitors that I have to move it to some other site. If I have a setup like this, I can easily inform and re-direct atleast 75% of my visitors that my site is moving to another location. I would still need to work on my SEO, on the new domain but, atleast I can retain my current visitor base !
