    Anyone recognize it?
    What is IETF
    What is DTD?
    EN = english right?

    It's not a frontpage tag and we found it on one of our pages.
    Besides a few other pages being edited.
    Also found span tags and other tags in the code.
    And hyperlinks changed to go to another site.

    IETF = Internet Engineering Task Force
    DTD = Document Type Definition
    EN = English

    It's yours if it's on your page. :) Most likely stuck in there by an HTML editor.

    They are just a standard group... for example if you look at the source of the pages here, you will see the W3C tag.

    They won't know... just like if you email W3C, they won't know when "their" tag appears on sites. Remove it if you don't want it.

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

    This is your tag.

    The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential. W3C is a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding. On this page, you'll find W3C news, links to W3C technologies and ways to get involved. New visitors can find help in Finding Your Way at W3C. We encourage organizations to learn more about W3C and about W3C Membership.

    Ok so we know you belong to this group.

    I am not affiliated to http://www.ietf.org/

    So really why is there tag in our page?

    Just in case others want to see them
    http://www.w3.org

    I want to know who put it there and why.

    Ok thanks that link helped.

    The HTML 4.01 Transitional DTD includes everything in the strict DTD plus deprecated elements and attributes (most of which concern visual presentation). For documents that use this DTD, use this document type declaration: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

    OK so someone used HTML 4.01 to edit the site that belongs to the IETF group without our permission.

    So they can add scripts and etc to access the page and site if they add attribute and elements? Or change them when ever they want?

    This is HTML 4.01 Strict DTD, which excludes the presentation
    attributes and elements that W3C expects to phase out as
    support for style sheets matures. Authors should use the Strict
    DTD when possible, but may use the Transitional DTD when support
    for presentation attribute and elements is required.

    HTML 4 includes mechanisms for style sheets, scripting,
    embedding objects, improved support for right to left and mixed
    direction text, and enhancements to forms for improved
    accessibility for people with disabilities.

    We use frontpage and that tag has never been in any of our frontpage web pages before.
    Plus we had other glitches on the site too and tags added in some pages that where not there before.

    Since I can't imagine hackers penetrating you site with the purpose of making your HTML comply with the standards, someone or something on your side edited HTML and inserted DOCTYPE.

    I don't belong to them. They just set web standards, so the tag tells web browsers what standards your web page is using, that's all.

    Haha.

    Dude... if the doctype is bothering you, why don't you just REMOVE IT or better yet, replace it with an W3C XHTML1.1 doctype? It doesn't seem like a huge issue, and nobody on this forum can tell you who put that tag there...

    Sorry
    1 Not a DUDE.
    2. Really it should not be there and it's not ours and not part of FrontPage.
    3. Someone had to access the site and edit it for that tag to appear.
    4. And the other odd font and span tags to appear.
    5. Stuff has been changed on the site.

    So what would you conclude?

    If you saw a dent in your car what would you do?
    Check out all scenarios?
    That is what i am doing.

    tntcheats what would you conclude?
    Most men scratch and fart?
    We all know that.

    This isn't a dent in a car. This is like a flyer under your windshield wiper. Just get rid of it, and the problem's solved.

    Most people don't hack a site just to add HTML tags.

    Well we are sending the html content to the fcc and the ftc for accessing and editing our site without our permission and to a few other authorities also.
    Oh, just in case for the paranoid, it's not hostgator.
