Listings on List My Niche get quite a few hits, but usually only on the first or second page. Those with the most views are featured on the "popular" section and seem to get the gravy from those looking through my directory. Stats tell me that I receive some lookers, so I would say yes there are people looking for sites on directories. As for me, I ocassionally browse directories for interesting sites I may not be able to find on any search engine and 9 times out of 10 i always find exactly what I'm looking for.
Personally i use the SE first but when I want to find some new sites which has not been that successful in the SERPS but may contain content which I think is valuable, then I go for certain Directories
I do use Yahoo's directory every now and then for search. The results on your search are usually very relevant, and of course, the results tell you the category in which the result is listed...hate clicking on a result in Google only to get to the page to find out it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic you were after.
Thanks Blogmaster for creating this thread as it's really good to see wether people will use directories to find things, because if a lot of people don't then advertising in them might not be the best option. Reputation Given!
The only people using directories to search the web are tech savvy. If that is your demographic you might get some benefit from them (other then link juice). If it is not, there are very few dirs that will do you any good.
I think the precise opposite. Directories are also used by those who can't think of the right search words. I get some traffic from directories (not as much as I used to though) and not at all on technical subjects. I think some people, once they found a directory they like, will keep coming back to it to browse or even search.
When I'm launching a new site, I use directories both for submissions and for finding potential link partners (or sites where I can request a link).
Yes, I am also using directories to find well-promoted sites with which I would like to purchase/exchange links.. esp. since google does not do a very good job on that.
For writing articles i often visit dmoz for a specific category. I always find some quality links there. Maybe it's true : Humans do it better !
