Twitter is good for list-building and becoming the center of influence in your niche if you provide value. Most people spam so you know they aren't making any money or building rapport. Facebook is also a list-building goldmine once you have a targeted following of folks that know, like, and trust you. Yes, I think it works great. You can get somewhat of targeted people on there too by looking at their profile pics. Young or old? Male or Female? Stuff like that helps out
Frankly speaking, I haven't had much success with twitter. I receive a good number of connections per day but no noticeable conversions.
I think only techie guys use bot. I don't know the actual percentage who uses bot method of twittering. but i think there is not that much awareness of using bots. may be i am in the dark that the people out are become more educated to use the techical and handy dandy methods for their marketing.

I tried using twitter for marketing purposes. The problem that I ran into is that everyone else does also. Most people on twitter seem to be doing the same thing. Just getting their name out there and making some money periodically by hoping that one of their followers will click a link and buy.
I dont go over mad when using twitter,but yes i do use it and i do get clicks to my sites so as a marketing tool it is good although i dont use it to its full potential.Yet
