I've received a few comments on my blog as to why I don't use the top comment plugin for our blog. http://blogaboutyourblog.com/2008/04/07/top-comments-plugin-good-or-bad/ Do you use the plugin? If not, how do you reward your commenters?
I tend to keep it there at the start of a blogs life to encourage comments and then remove it later. The more successful your blog comes the more you will tend to attract spammers who will leave pointless irrelevant comments for the sole purpose of getting onto your top commentators list (particularly in your niche). It's good to reward commentators but at the end of the day the people who leave great comments tend to be those who don't need rewarded.
http://www.thewwwblog.com/be-a-top-commentator-and-win.html This is how i reward my commentators and also do provide them link love through the top commentators plugin. This is because i love my commentators.
Yes. Rewarding your commentators is good thing. If you reward your commentators more comments you will get. More comments on your blog more people will keep eye on your next post to be first commentator. thus you will get more traffic and subscribers.
The plugin is pretty good... but not for all of us it is necessary... As for example, for tech blogs, most other commentators are general people rather than other bloggers (generally speaking of course!) and most of them doesnt care much about what number of comments he/she makes... but then again, its a very good plugin... i have it installed but never used it.
I had it up for a while, but never really liked it on my own blog. Thats how the other ideas for rewarding my comments came along. CommentLuv sounds good, does anyone here use that?
You may have a check at my blog. Commenting is more due to top commentators plugin, comment luv plugin, and the threaded comments plugin, and also the contest.
