do you use meta tag description?

I know meta tag have no effects on your position but I recently found that google and yahoo shows the footer of my website in their SERP.

I was expecting them to show the content (article) of the webpage since it appears first before the navigation and footer. but for some reason, they use the footer as description in the SERP.

is there any way for me to fix this w/o manually creating meta tags for every single webpage or what?

A meta description will solve that problem. While meta tags don't carry much weight because of spam, epecially in the keywords meta tag, they're still useful.

Try the metatag analyzer here.

The only useful META tag is description which is like an extra content to your website. So, try to use it for every main page which you want to be in rankings.

An excerpt of your webpage will appear in SERPs if you do not use the title tag and/or the meta-description tag in the heading of your webpage. I believe the excerpt is the first bit of text that is read by the search-engine spider when it crawls your webpage, which is not necessarily the first bit of text that visitors see. The following code is the minimum amount of coding that should appear in the heading of every webpage:

<head>
<title>A</title>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=B" />
<meta name="description" content="C" />
<meta name="keywords" content="D" />
</head>
Code (markup):
• A - Put a title here that is attractive to the visitors of this particular webpage and that describes the content of the webpage well. Note that attractiveness for visitors is different from SEO friendliness;
• B - The character set needs to be defined, e.g. iso-8859-1 or utf-8;
• C - Put a description here that is attractive to the visitors of this particular webpage and that describes the content of the webpage well. Again, attractiveness to visitors differs from SEO friendly content.
• D - Put a small number of relevant keywords here, separated by commas. Keywords are still important for some search-engines, but for other search-engines they are not anymore, due to abuse/misuse. It doesn't hurt to put them there.

I think you got some wrong information about meta tags,
Infact Description Meta Tag is very important in google and yahoo along with the Title.
you have to create unique meta tags for each page and this will help in improving your ranking....

when I search for something and see a result that has a well written META desc, and another listing that has mindless drivel pulled at random by the search engine, I'll click the 1st one...
