So if Mercedes cut the price of their cars, you would drive one?...otherwise it makes it OK to steal one since they charge a lot......same logic, my friend.

The "logic" given by some peole in this thread is absoluely amazing.

Forget the BS and justifications. It is stealing, and the only reason you do it is because you won't get caught. Try that with a Mercedes or a Crown Roast from the supermarket. And, most of you cry over the first injustice you have to endur when done against you.

    Unbelievable....NO...very believable in today's society.

I don't feel sorry for Microsoft or these large companies getting their software pirated. The company is worth $300 billion, and Gates is the richest man in the world. Its not like it is going to hurt them.......besides I went to the Office Depot in my town a few weeks ago, and the store shelves which had Vista on them were empty, because people were buying.

One thing that some of you fail to understand is that most people don't have the skills to crack a software program. And they aren't going to sit around waiting for someone else to do it. Generally, by the time some hackers cracks an OS or popular software program, the company has already made tens of millions.

Besides, if people pirate your software, this means you must already be successful, otherwise, people wouldn't waste time pirating it.

I don't pirate much, since there is a lot of open sourced software online. In any event, the number of people waiting for a software program to be cracked and distributed are in the minority. Most people go down to the store and buy it.

Big Corporations whine about piracy, talking about how they are losing money. Give me a break. Most Blockbuster movies are still pulling in tens of millions in a single weekend, despite the fact that video sharing sites and p2p sites list them for free. I don't believe their will come a day when companies don't make money from copyrighted products. They will always make money when the product is first produced, and through franchising.

If your product is good, people will buy, and some people will pirate. It is a fact of life in the digital age. Get used to it.

I dont agree. The vast majority of the software I look at I wouldn't want to buy.
Now if hypothetically I can find it pirated online for free, however, I might take a second look at the software.
If there's good software which I need and know I will use, I buy it. Simple as that.

    tesla,

    See comments above.

Big time denial/justification/thievery problem...you win the prize so far.

And, you had the nerve to bitch about Walmart the way you did in that thread the other day....That was you, right?

Yes, I've pirated all my Adobe software because of their ridiculous prices.

    -Dreamweaver
    -Photoshop CS2
    -ImageReady

Photoshop Elements I bought legitimately though :).

Yeah, it was me who started the thread on Walmart, but you are saying in your response that I support piracy, or that I'am an apologist for people who do it.

This is simply not the truth. By my comments I wasn't supporting piracy, I was just explaining the facts. Bill Gates is the richest man in the world, and people pirating his software is not going to hurt him financially. Does this mean people should do it? No, and I never implied they should.

Microsoft, Adobe, Pixar, Warner Brothers.......all these companies have so much money that piracy does not hurt them as much as they make out. If you're a small company, it could be a problem, but not for a monolith like Microsoft or Adobe.

All I tried to say in my last post is that piracy is here to stay. You want to know why? Because piracy is a result of hacking, and hacking will always be here to stay. As long as we have a digital network like the Internet, some hacker with times on his hand will crack software, games, DVDs, and distribute them on the web. Again, this doesn't mean its right, its just the way it is.

While piracy can severly hurt small companies, it doesn't become prevalent until that company is a household name. If you got to certain places on the web, and look for Adobe or Windows, you will find it. If you look for a software program that is not all that popular, you will likely not find it.

One good example is Xmen 3. During the opening weekend, the movie made more than $100 million. Did some people sneak camcorders in the theater to copy and distribute on the Internet? Yes. Does this mean that the producers didn't make any money? Of course not. When you add DVD sales and franchising along with the box office ticket sales, the movie made a insane amount of money, and the pirates were in the minority.

My mates dad was in the team who developed golden eye. He writes a lot of software/games etc Lillte does he know is that his own son's comp is filled with pirated games and software.

When it comes to the damage you are doing to the companies... I think most of the people would not buy the product if there was no pirated version available anyway. Its like... iv missed an episode of high stakes poker, i went and downloaded a torrent. If i could not find one i would have been like... ah well, i can do without it... rather than go and buy a DVD.

about a year ago i came across an article discussing pirated software. unfortunately i do not know where it is now but i do remember the main point of it....

basically, if a person pirates software, the company isnt *losing* any money just not gaining anything. because most people who pirate software are teenagers and people who cannot afford them. therefore if they did not pirate it, they would not buy it and the company would technically still be losing money. also, teenagers who use pirated software i.e. photoshop, learn how to use them very well and might even base their career on it and later on in life when they have a job as a graphic designer, they will demand the software they are native to, photoshop. so if you think about it, software piracy is good in a way.

and to the person who said a pirated version of xp screwed their computer up...i have been using pirated xp since day one and have never screwed up a computer. i think it comes from the user, if you know how to use the internet and access ANY site you want without getting adware, spyware, viruses...your computer will probably NEVER get messed up.

oh and just for the record, if you count up all the pirated software in my computer, it probably totals over $100,000 =]. i am using legit vista though since i purchased a new computer and it came with it

All the software on my PC is 100% pirated.

I dont know why people buy when they can get it for free.

Download pirated XP and then run windows genuine advantage software which makes ur XP a genuine one and now u can download anything from microsoft site.

It certainly did not appear that way, at least to me, in that post you made, however, if that was your intention, then you have my apologies.

    Miktor,

I wish you could find that article. I would like to know who who wrote it. I know a hell of a lot of people who use pirated software, and they are NOT teenagers or people who cannot afford them. In fact, look at this thread. Almost every response is "I use pirated software". This is from marketers who supposedly are making money online. Certainly, some of these people can afford legit software but they use pirated software because they do not want to pay for legit software...so they justify their theft. Guess it helps them sleep at night.

As far as a company does not lose money, they just don't gain anything is the second funniest thing I've read tonight. The first was that teenagers who use pirated software and get good at using it will demand it some day in their profession.

Who was this article written by? Certainly not an authority. It sounds like it was written by another low life who uses pirated software and found the need to justify it in an article.

Lose sleep? I hold a mini celebration every time I think about another monopolistic billionaire not receiving an extra £100.

no one will use genuine s/w if it is for personal use... But most pirated s/w contain viruses, malicious scripts, and things like that... (no programmer will spend his/her time on pirating, if he is not getting anything in return)
