When blog commenting, is it better just to put your website url in the URL field, or do most people add an html link tag within the comment itself?

I don't do much blog commenting, but it really depends on the blog. Blogs that allow you to drop anchor links in with the comment, especially if the links have no relation to the blog itself, tend to be the ones that allow spam, so they don't pass any decent link juice to your site.

Depends on the site. Lot's of sites allow a dofollow link to pass through in the comment section whether in the "name" field or the "comment" section. Heck if your post is on topic and relevant to the blog, why not post a link in the comments section? The way I look at it, the blog owner is receiving more traffic and your getting a link. Win/win.

It wholly depends on the blog itself. It it allows you to do that, you can leave a link. But you'd better do not forget
the most important thing:Never spam.Nobody allow this and will ban you on finding that.

Some sites allow putting anchor text within blog comments. But such site/blog quickly gets spammed so blog owners only allow website url field and name field where you can put your anchor text in and anchor texts are usually prohibited within the comment area.

using anchor text will make your comment look like spam most of the times. it is wise to use the URL field and use a real name on the name field for maximum approval. if i get a comment on my blog from some "texas holdem poker" linking to some online casino, i will not approve that comment. but if some Jack Smith makes a comment linking to his personal or information blog/site, then i will approve for sure. no blog owners want to get their blogs spammed.
