I guess because I have no reason not to trust them. I guess "things" could "happen" if there are dishonest employess, however that can occur in any company. As far as the company itself, I don't think they would take a chance of a "black eye" by trying to capitalioze on my or anyone else's source code. besides, they are too busy making money by providing good hosting services.

I trust because my host is a reputable one and I don't think they have the time to look into my sites.

Actually I meant anything - including obfuscatable code.

I trust most - if not all hosting services bosses, but if one pissed off employee tries to steal your multi-million business code?

The reason why I am asking is that am about to co-locate my server.

    Cheers

If you are building applications that are commercially sensitive which you want to protect then get yourself a dedicated machine where you have the ROOT password. The hosting company can't get in if they don't know the password.

I use a dedicated server but really... if someone wants to hack your stuff, they'll find a way. :(

Don't put your source code on your production server.

if you're using php you can encode it using zend.

I use php codelock.. it's great,

alternatively you can read you hosts terms and conditions for more info, and even protect youself legally, you can file a law suit against the host if they breach their terms and consitions and causes you to lose money.

terms and conditions are a contractual agreement between both parties.. there is no reason you cannot add you own conditions. Mind you the hosting service will probably tell you to p!ss off.

You have no other choices, everyone can't make a server at home.

All you can do to prevent you effort (source code) from ripping is to choose a reliable and well known hosting company.
