It has been said that whatever results you get with overture you need to multiply it by 5 to figure out the searches on google .Google accounts for more than 40% of search engine traffic.

I use Google Suggest to identify related keywords, but I've never used it to determine keyword popularity.

Yea I trust overture's kw suggesstion tool to an extent. Of course I don't count the number's to be right on..I think that would be almost impossible. However, I do use the tool when trying to find new keywords so my answer is Yes. I do trust overtures kw tool

I was going to post this as a separate thread, but here seems to be a good place to put it :)
I'm generally confues by the variations in results from overture, wordtracker and keyword discovery. These following figures all come through nichebot, which lets you look at all three databases. I understand that the figures vary from one databse to another, because of crawlers, bots, seo research, number of hits, and how long the database has recorded - that's fine.

What I don't get is how there can be so much variation in ranking and proportion between different keyword research tools. These results are just from a few quick ideas (#1-4), and each in different product areas but they all completely disagree with each other as to which would be more popular searches:

    #.... Wordtracker....Overture....Keyword Discovery
    1........ 23............... 870............ 2080
    2.........20............. 1063..........17503
    3......108................ 216.............. 416
    4.......... 2...............980..............425

    (forgive my crude tabling;-))

Wordtracker has kyword #3 as far and away the most popular, but it is the least popular in overture and Keyword discovery. #2 is the out and out winner for keyword discovery, but mediocre in wordtracker. #4 almost leads in overture but is rock bottom in wordtracker. etc. etc.

So what can we make of all this, are any of these at all reliable?

Help someone please, I'm doing more and more research and getting less and less progress!

I always use overture as my starting point. But I'd think you'd be a fool to rely solely on overture when selecting your niche and/or keywords. There's a ton other good tools out there (as have already been mentioned).

I don't trust any Search Engine, whether Overture, Google Trends, etc.

They might be useful returning close approximates when deciding, but nothing to put faith on.

That's actually why I have created this thread. - Those tools seem to give so various results that I have just stopped using them at all. (Long time ago)

Or if I use them, I check if a keyword is just being searched at all and which one is searched more or less in general, regardless precise numbers provided by the tools.

I trust overture for two reasons: first it never let me down, secondly it has excellent references at numerous forums.
