I'm getting into the whole link building game and wanted to know if anyone tracks/notes their link building activity? Is it worth the time to track when I add a link here or a link there or drop 5 articles in 5 directories over there, etc, etc? This way you can possibly get an idea of what works and what doesn't? Is it worth the time to track what you're doing or not? Or is that time wasted that could've been used on getting more links?
Yes, but don't waste tons of time doing it..... one of the quickest ways of doing it is using Yahoo and doing site:http://yoururl.com Don't use GOogle's as they dont show all of the links. Stick with link building stuff that already works...... read my blog for some ideas for building links. The problem with tracking every single links is: 1) Sometimes (with directories, and blogs that moderate their comments) links wont show up right away 2) And even on pages where links do show up right away, the search engines don't crawl it immediately, so they dont log that link immediately.... so if you're stressing over a certain link instead of building more, then you are wasting time. Don't spend your time link tracking... spend your time link building....
I try not to spend too much time looking at how many links I have simply because that detracts from my time that should be spent building backlinks and creating content, but when I do I use Yahoo SiteExplorer.
I do use a tool to see where I rank for different keywords...but to refine my questions a little more...I agree that tracking every individual link would be a waste of time...but if I spend one day getting 50 backlinks in a couple forums or get 20 backlinks with some articles...etc, etc...should I be making a log of this backlink activity that I'm performing? This way, if I see a jump in rankings for a keyword I can look back in my linkbuilding activity log and see what may have caused it to research a little more to learn what the search engine may have liked. Or is this just pointless because you can never really tell why you jumped or droppped...like the stock market...so just focus on getting backlinks? Is anyone recording a log of their backlink activity? Or is it just best to focus on building links and not waste time keeping the log? Thanks for your feedback in advance!
Sure i am.And im very good at it because that's what i do: Build backlinks and track them. For me and for my clients.
