Thats a good point. What i was trying to say is, if i had the money, i would always choose paid dirs. (the quality ones) over the spammy free ones....

And where do you think Alive directory began? Any directory can be heavily promoted to get high PR and SERPs. That doesn't mean they're any good. Besides PR is only good for selling links. Most paid directories sell PR in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with free directories if it's not a free-for-all.

Now that's just being plain disrespectful. A lot of the free "Submit your site now" directories on DP are quite good and their owners have put in quite a lot of work to make them good. I know because I've submitted to a lot of them, not 1 in every 1000.

In my opinion, word clouds are link farms. They don't give the web user anything that they're searching for. A directory on the other hand lists websites in categories so that web users can find sites related to what they are looking for. Why do you think google and yahoo have their own?

So no, directories shouldn't be classified as link farms.

Very True but the same can be said for all websites.

As Malcolm Said, Google advice is to “Submit to Yahoo directory as well Dmoz and other "Industry Specifics"

If the directory was auto approved or full of spam then you have a point.

    Thanks Brian

Are you talking about free directories?

If not then your quote doesn't really make sense.

    Thanks Brian

    Hello...

Well i firmly believe that avivas strongest Directories list carries some
off the better directories that will do something for your rankings
...not mentioning the ones that you have excluded...

    1. Biz-King Directory
    2. Sleek Directory
    3. Directory Dump
    4. Romow
    5. Aerospect
    6. Dirsensi
    7. cascandra
    8. ewebpages
    9. Linkjuice
    10. GII
    11. Noble Web Directory

    and many many more...

What you fail to realize is that many off us DO work our butz off
to make a difference on the web.. ;)

    NOTE:
I added these off the top of my head and
All these to me have much to offer in my opinion...

(IF i missed your directories forgive me and please feel free to add)

    thx

if a directory well optimized and categorized, wisely promoted, offers something more than just simple links (but also artilces, news, etc) it will be considered as valuable resource.

Directories that just approve every submission, regardless of the quality of the site & relevance to the category, and even if the submission is poorly-written, are effectively link farms. A link farm will link to any site whether it's of good quality or not, and provides no value to visitors.

But many directories out there are selective about the sites they list, keeping high standards for the sites & their listings. The best directories turn down many more listings than they accept. There's nothing link-farmish about such directories, and they can be valuable tools in promoting websites as well as useful to visitors.

    all best,
    Denise

I think to a degree this is already happening. If you launch a brand new site and Google finds 200 links to the new site within months of the launch all coming from second tier directories they penalise the domain / site.

I had this happen to me about a year ago with a site I launched.

And i have to agree that some just build it and accept anything..:(

But if you think that some off us have it easy...

    Look at paypals new policy...

    Site Submitted = % of $$ involved

NOW Refused Site = % to refund payment back

Yes you even get stroked on the way out the door for doing the right thing
and refusing sites... lol no joke

    thx

Why didn't you just say that in your Original Post? You'd get lots of people agreeing :)

Yes. Because that is what directories are. Just a bunch of links. No more. No less.

I stopped using directories a long time ago. And even back in the days i tried creating the only content rich directory that did not quite work because webmasters would still submit the minimum.

Well some have that, NOT many

I would say around 10% have what you mentioned

The rest have 10 word descriptions and thousands of links :)
