I guess it won't hurt either...but better focus on content creation...when you have many pages indexed by Google then you'll be found more easily (just think at Wikipedia and how many pages they have...)

It could help if the links are DoFollow.
NoFollow links won't help that much, only traffic.

Organic traffic which brings the serphs to index your website faster. Cause the the search engine bots are speed booted on the social networks. Which drives them to your website. So you will get indexed on the search engines faster then ever. Of course your content should be unique other wise it's dupe content it will get indexed but after mean while it will be de-indexed.

The social networks has many advantages in optimizing your website and driving traffic. But in the future you would need link infrastructure to get well on the keyword basis of your website.

Do-follow No-follow this changes in what your intend to do. Do-follow and no-follow both are usefull.

Do-follow = backlink + traffic
