Do you think popular affiliate programs are the best to promote?

I recently tried promoting the BlockBuster Online Affiliate program and didn't get much results. I've received hundreds of clicks on the offer but no signups. I'm beginning to think that it's because this program has been overly marketed and most people already know about it. Is it just this program or should I completely stay away from what everyone else is trying to promote?

The problem with popular affiliate programs is that many people promote them and the competition is really hard.
On the other hand you're fairly certain that the products are good and you will get paid on time.

More often than not, if the affiliate program matches the page content exactly, then it will sell... period. However, never put all your stock in one or two affiliate programs, go crazy and feature as many as is reasonable for the layout and amount of page content.

I think it's better to promote new sites, but only when you are sure that they pay
