Not generally - since most blogging software now sticks "nofollow" tags around any links in comments. I removed the nofollow from my comments in my blog, as I am sure other bloggers have - but still you are looking at a small population.

However, I have seen some dramatic traffic from appropriate blog comments - which ultimately CAN lead to links from other blogs. Every little bit helps.

You may not get a PR boost because of the nofollow tag, but you'll still get traffic and a backlink from it. And remember, there's other search engines out there beyond Google - they don't give as much traffic, but Yahoo & MSN don't seem to care about nofollow tags yet.

Yes, most blogs have a no follow tag, but I have tracked traffic coming from technorati due to commenting on a blog and it can be worth just that traffic to spend the time coming up with a valid comment on a blog entry truly related to your links theme.

Giving comments only for getting PR is an error, later or before Search engines will ignore them, and you probably disturb the blog if yoyr comment is of no use.

But if your comments are related and useful for that blog, it can give you traffic, which is very important.

I thought that if there is no-follow tags, the search engines won't count it as a backlink.

Google understands no-follow - but Yahoo ignores it. I am not sure about MSN.

Only each search engine decides what to do with the "no follow" thing, but the most important thing is not to spam in other's people blogs only for getting PR

If you are making valid comments on a related blog I see so reason why you shouldn't do this. Although, it may not help your PR much -- many blog comment pages have PR 0. It will help backlinks and possibly SERPS.

nofollow tag is applied by default hence no benefit from seo point of view, so don't waste time.

That may be true for google, but it isn't the case for Yahoo and MSN.

IMO the answer is somewhere in between. We all continue to see spammers boosting their serps in matter of weeks due to this technique. At the same time G is being very strict on them and this could get you banned.

If you are considering putting such links, then my strong advice is to make those links a small portion of your link portfolio. Diversifying your links will do the trick best and is recognized by g as organic.

Ohh and dont use the same texts and NEVER use automated software. Because this is spam. Try to actually say something meaningful.

    Spam sux ass!

And regarding the nofollow tag. I think people are overexaggerating. IMO no more than 35%-50% use the nofollow tag. If it hadn't been this way, then there would be no spammers.

Well, the point is - WordPress uses nofollow tag by DEFAULT - so, any WP blogs will most likely have nofollow in their comments.

However - some more enlightened bloggers turn the nofollow tags off in their comments, but are careful about what eventually gets posted.

...and you can get many genuinely interested users clicking through to your site as well. it's not generally always about search engines!
