i'd say that adsense has damaged the quality of the internet. more spam, more cleverly disguised spam too.

You are right. Google seems to own the internet. But its so inevitable, I can't imagine life without it. I don't know why, but I am so addictaed to Google, I can't even imagine switching to some other Se no matter what.

Its like, love them or hate them, you will have to use them anyways :)

Of course Google has damage the internet, but if they didn't someone else. But they damaged it for different reasons then what you stated.

The reason can really be summed up in one word.

    ADSENSE.

The amount of MFA sites out there is astounding. Now I must admit SPAM sites for PPP (poker/phamacy/porn) is just as bad, but thats not googles fault...

Google, with the tools they are creating, they are leading us like cattle into their barn... and one day they are going to close the door and to be able to get out, we will have to pay... that's when we will all loose.

Google has done a great job improving the internet.

In a way I agree with you and in a way I don't. Google is a large corporation, and I don't trust big billion dollar companies. So what you say does have some merit.

However, what you say is only true for those who put all their eggs in the "proverbial basket." I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Don't put all your hopes in Google. Spread out your business and invest in other areas. Google could very well destroy us, and I've talked to other webmasters who share the same fear.

Sad but 100% true. Google has created a cult following with PR. Smart marketing move.

Google has done nothing that I can tell to affect me in anything I do.

If google shut down tomorrow, I dont think I would see much of an effect either way. I would lose adsense revenue, but I would just increase the placement of other ads.

I would lose the search results from google, but that just means people would be using other engines and I would have to get it from there.

The only reason I pay more attention to google is because they are the largest and most powerful right now. But seriously, they could shut their doors tomorrow, and it ultimately wouldnt be that big of a deal.

Now, for all those MFA sites, you guys are screwed. ;)

How can that be? I've had to tailor all my websites to meet the approval of their crawlers.

Most people have to ignore the other search engines and focus on Google because they have such a large market share.

Wait until a minor glitch in Google sends you tons of traffic, translating into tons of cash for you, and then you'll be on your knees in no time. :)

I like Google but I have to agree with this guy 100%. It's true, you mainly get really old (like 2002) results when searching. It's really out of date. When I'm searching I prefer up to date things, you know! The internet's change alot in the past 4 or 5 years. They should just drop site's who's content hasn't really change over that period of tim instead of giving them 1st position.

Google is main source of income for most of the members in this forum. Correct me if I am wrong. This is not the correct place for this discussion. Add me in the above list too.

Here are the traffic stats from Nielsen//NetRatings for November.
    Google 46.3 percent
    Yahoo 23.4
    MSN 11.4
    AOL 6.9
    Ask Jeeves/MyWay 4.8
Then come the rest with 6.2 percent.
    EarthLink
    Dogpile
    Netscape
    iWon
    ETC

Considering the amount of time it takes for Google to maybe rank you in the top 10 Yahoo over time probably sends way more traffic anyway.

Yahoo is my bread and butter, Google is just the cream on top.

It can't be discussed in the "google" forum because people here use adsense? Hell, I use adsense... doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on google's pagerank strategy and how it appears to have corrupted natural linking. I'm in the adnetwork too, so I also corrupt the internet's natural linking, but google is the one that creates the necessity for that.

Just raising a point, agree or disagree, but don't say it can't/shouldn't be discussed, heh.

I do think Adsense has changed the Internet by causing the creation of large numbers of spammy sites, link farms, and other sites that wouldn't exist if Adsense (et al.) weren't allowing them to make money.

On the other hand, Adsense has allowed good websites with real content to monetize their efforts in ways that were not possible before it existed.

I'd rather have it or not..

Actually i think google didnt damaged the quality of internet but excuse me, google is like a link for me. A search engine is a link factory, it doesnt gives you the possibility to choose between 250 000 000 pages like in the result shown as usual when you type : web promotions for instance, but it gives 20 to 100 very useful links. Just links. Google is a link provider not a link maker.

google didnt damaged the quality of internet, it grouped it. Not well though, but it sure did that and still does. Anyway one day or another we will have what we want by typing some specific keywords... At school we will have keywords lessons so we know how to find anything on the web via search engines ;) dont you think folks ?
