Unfortunately - but not the kind of attention (never ever visiting this site if possible & you-can-be-bloody-sure-I-won't-recommend-your-site-to-anyone kind of attention) you'd probably wish to avoid.

But I think this may actually get some people's attention. Some people don't even read a word of your website before exiting so this may be a way to get them to read your site. I'm using a sales letter to sell an information product I made so I think I might give it a try. If I get targeted visitors and don't make a sale, then I know for a fact to stay away from this.

Yes, like mentioned earlier - it's possible to use them in some instances (depends how you do it).

If it's one of those freaking automated "chat support", rest guaranteed I never buy from you if you try that trick on me :)

But, in some places it can work - but most of the time they are probably annoying.

Exit popups remind me of this persistant telemarketer who called me up the other day trying to sell a subscription to their newspaper. I was trying to be nice and told him to call back a few weeks from now. He didn't shut up until I finally told him I didn't like their newspaper was lousy and I preferred to read a different paper. If he caught me on a good day his sales technique probably would've worked on me. Sometimes you can annoy people to the point to where they buy your product or service just so you'll shut up and leave them alone.

I use the Exit Grabber on one of my squeeze pages and I have been able to boost my subscription rate by about 25 percent. It depends a lot on how you implement this. When I first tried it I found that I could not get it to work. However, like anything on the internet if you do it right it will make a significant difference to your bottom line.

Yeh, depends how you do it. I've seen lots of popups, and most of them were bad. There were *couple* of "okay" exit popups, but that's pretty much it.

The one I'm developing may be annoying to some but is highly effective in promoting any website.

For example, if I was to promote the Google website, I would start by getting their permission. (I haven't in this case, hope they don't mind).

Then I would simply use the following...
    http://www.solavar.com/promotes/google

The promoted site appears in the promoter's domain, with an exit poll ready to spring in action on exit.

The thing I hate are those stupid little javascript alerts:"Are you SURE you want to leave? To leave press Ok. To stay press cancel" Mostly they suck because even when you go to a page on the same site it decides to give you one of those. I usually just get tired of them and leave.

I really do believe it's all about the offer. I have personally bought something very recently AFTER clickikng the exit button, only because the offer presented in the exit popup was good for me.

Popups are there to get attention. they do, just use them well...

A lot of people are using them to offer you a small discount or maybe another offer they may be interested in such as an affiliate program you're trying to promote. I think trial and error will tell me everything.

I know that exit pop under's is tempting because of the relatively high CPM, I do not recommended you to use them if you consider your users loyal. for the user it feels like bad remonder from your site once he browsed away

It's obvious that a large number of people don't like them, even if it's, say, a third of the people out there, and since practically all won't click on the ad anyway, doesn't it make sense to not do them?

Don't you think that, in the long run, you will lose money?

Perhaps you should consider doing one that thanks them for coming to your site, and remind them to put your url in their "favorites," and give them a reason why they should.

I think normal pops up are fine for exiting, but the one that require to hit the cancel button are annoying.

Popups can keep people away. I considered purchasing one not-to-be-named pretty high profile marketer's product, but got annoyed the fact that he tried to trick me using exit popup automated-online chat. (where bot "talked" to me).

Since he was selling internet marketing products - that was a lousy trick, and my perception of the product got lower. Would I have bought the stuff... that's hard to answer. Maybe - maybe not, but now as I think about "purchasing new stuff by this guy", I immediately remember me earlier bad experience - and tend to think that "this guy tries to trick me into buying".

But... if it's just one random site selling dog goodies... I suppose I'd just be annoyed but couldn't do much about it :)

Bottom line: popups CAN be annoying.

But that doesn't mean we shouldn't use them.

I suppose, in the end: "It depends"

I did posted the exit grabber code that I found on my website and where to edit it. The link can be found in signature. I only use popups on certain landing pages, it depends really on the type of site I am marketing and the target audience.

I don't like pop-ups when I surf the web - however, I like them on my site when they bring me money. :)
