I have some websites that have around 2- 3 backlinks are still ranking top in google for so many keywords.. but nowadays building links technique is really overrated in my opinion.. What do you say? I agree with getting backlinks may improve PR but does it give a guarantee to be on top in google?
Yes, it does. The more backlinks you have, the higher you'll rank, provided that your links do NOT come from link farms or dubious pages. That's a fact that isn't up for debate.
No! It is not over rated.. It is rated correctly and it is still the best way to get top SERPs, if done correctly and legitimately.
I don't think it holds as much weight as everybody seems to think it does; however, it is one of the few confirmed complex pieces of the google algorithem so it's worked on much. I personally don't think it's the most important though, and if you do a few others things right and get a bit of luck on some less intense niches you can generally do fine without many links.
building link is good but with targeted keywords and anchor text link will help in a better way to get rank and traffic in seo.
Backlinks are just one of many methods that will get your site ranked in the serps. Your site might benefit from having an older domain age, excellent on-site SEO, those backlinks may be extremely relevant. Perhaps the keywords you rank for aren't that competitive ... your site doesn't have to be awesome, it just needs to be better than your competitors in your keyword range. To ignore backlinks is to throw away probably the best tool you have for ranking in the serps.
IMHO backlinks are important. They can be compared with the sport fans of some football club. If you have many fans you earn money from selling tickets, t-shirts and so on. It means that you are popular. The same about backlinks!
There are indications that Google is moving away from rating plain backlinks as highly. The results from Caffeine do not seem as dependent on backlinks for example. I suspect they will move more towards TrustRank and LSI in future updates.
