Here's an interesting take on it: http://www.link-builder.info/pr0-web-directories-is-submitting-a-waste-of-time/link-development/
being optimistic is the key in any type of business. if one has a business to run , promoting it every possible way should be done. one never knows when a directory might hit it good, backlinks never hurt any0ne.
Actually that's highly unlikely. I do think there's still room in the market for good niche directories - but these generic ones that just keep coming up on DP are just fluf in the grander scheme of things. They came a few years too late IMO. About optimism - that does need to be balanced with realism. A new directory that wants to be an authority has to have at least the following characteristics: - good budget for real hard advertisement, to get an audience - good budget for a unique look - a real editorial team that does more then just accept submitted websites, but actually goes out and finds the sites that visitors are looking for. - a real editorial team that will also refuse websites, based on editorial guidelines and human judgement. A niche directory that starts with the above in place will have a far easier time of it. I don't think its impossible to become big in the directory game, but most of the new players are going to go down or remain insignificant. It's darn cheap to try in this business, but it's also a lot of work to get in on a game where there is as much competition as there is in this niche.
While I don't really care about PR, being PR0 suggests it is new. If the owner has a few other well established directories, I'd buy a listing on the new one. If not, I have no idea how serious the owner is, so I'd submit a site only if the listing is free. I see dozens and dozens of directories that charge substantial fess for a listing, when most pages aren't even cached.
Selectively, if I know the owner from dp, or if it's well designed and looks like the owner is committed.
Yah, the beauty of submitting to brand new dirs... is that their free usually Get in there before it becomes a pay directory...
