Do you still code for a 800 x 600 resolution?

Do people still use this resolution enough that we should keep.

I'm in the middle of redesigning my blog and I'm wondering if it's worth shrinking it down so much?

I've seen many sites that have either switched to a fluid design or have a large fixed site with a width greater than 800.

Yes I still code for 800px wide desktops as almost 11% of my visitors still use 800x600 desktops. I'd love to switch to a wider format, but I expect it will be a couple of years before my 800x600 numbers drop low enough to be ignored.

It is very hard for me to design for 800x600 considering I run under something like 1400x1200. Why anyone would still used 800x600 is beyond me, but what really kills me is I have seen people running 600x400.

I also design to a width of 770px. I am working on making the design fluid, however, so that I never have to worry about size again.

Do not confuse screen resolution with browser window size. The screen rez does not matter. People, especially the technically savvy, run their browsers reduced when they have large screens. Even among folks with large screens, you will alienate a significant number if your page requires h-scrolling at 800px browser width. See actual browser sizes.

This topic has been beat to death. Did you search for previous threads? Why not?

    cheers,

You also have to consider people with sub-14" screens.

Kinda, but not really. Whenever I update my sites now I make them for > 800px resolution.

Fluid width is a better option if it works with your design.

Where possible, I do try and make the sites relativley fluid, and proportional as opposed to actual fixed sizes... for example I would just use like a div with a width of 80% for the content and then it will be 80% of the screen whatever the size... type of thing, but then all my coding which is actually online at the moment doesn't have any of that because it hasn't been updated in yonks... I've just been building for other people (that was just in case you were bored and clicked on some of the links and wondered why it was so rubbish!)

I know this topic has been beaten to death. I simply wanted to get a feel for what other webmasters were doing.

I've seen the purchases of large screens beginning to takeoff and more and more websites coding for a larger than 800px width.

I wondered if webmasters here were doing the same or still compensating for the 800 crowd.

Screen size still plays a role. If the screen res is low the browser window size will always be smaller.

Yes, and considering most do and have the option of maximising the browser window size, screen size is the more important factor. My favourite method in a 3 column layout is to have a fluid centre column with the right column hidden when the browser is resized so I code for 1024x768 but make sure my site is still more than satisfactory in as low as 640x480 or even lower, as many including myself like to have a browser and another app running side by side, especially when the web page is related to the other app.

If I have no choice and must have a fixed size layout, I code for 800x600 and depending on the target market and stats, I might make a stylesheet or separate version just for lower resolution users.

Most have been 800 but I'm think the next site will go >800.

    No. It. Doesn't.

If your display is sanely configured, it will have a resolution of ≈96 pseudo pixels per inch of visible screen (noticeably smaller than the nominal size). That means a 12" screen will be about 800×600px resolution; a 15" screen about 1024×768; a 17" screen, 1280×960; and so on. No matter what window size you choose to use, it will take up the same physical area of the screen. For an 800×600 window, that equates to 8â…“" × 6¼". No matter what the screen size is!

We are not talking about a large screen with a low resolution, we are talking about the size of the browser window on the virtual desktop. How hard is that to understand?

Yes I still code for 800 resolution users.

For the people who have 1024 resolution they already have a fancy background surrounding the main site. But for 800 users it fits well.

i will either do it with percents to fit all resolutions or 1024x768 , most people are using this now! yeah it would be great if the site would fit 800x600 too but something that can ruin the whole page for users with resolution above 800x600!
