Do You Squidoo?

    Hey Guys,

I've not posted for a while, as I've been trying to develop a
    product with a business partner.

But I've been looking hard at squidoo, as some people are
telling me that it's an absolute amazing tool in their
    toolchest.

Is this the truth? And if so, is there any advice anyone can
give me to make squidoo marketing even more successful?
I don't really have any clue as to how they work - or at
least, no clue as to how to execute what they're suppose to
    do.

    Thanks in advance.

There was a point where you could write a lens around a noncompetitive long tail keyword, point a few links at it and get a page in the top 5 within a few days. Then it apparently started getting abused and along came the 'Squidoo Slap' where Google apparently put a penalty on Squidoo as one day all rankings fell through the floor and still have not returned.

Needless to say, I'm no longer a fan of creating content and getting pages to rank for any domain other than my own.

I think you have everything you need to get started with Squidoo now.

Squidoo effects have been cramped down lately, it used to be very effective.

BUT it is still a good tool for marketing purposes.

Hello - Back in April I created a few lenses, almost instantly they appeared in some nice long tail search results. Fast forward to the present - almost nothing - been spanked like a naughty red-headed stepchild.

Kudos! That sounds like the most intelligent and realistic approach.

For people who don't yet have their own web site, Squidoo is an inexpensive option for obtaining a web presence. Similar to a blog, but not quite. It allows affiliate links to be placed in the copy, which is a no-no at most article sites for those using article marketing. So yes, it can definitely be used as a marketing tool. I haven't noticed any high placement rankings on Google, though, other than pages that had in the past already been ranked high on the first or second page. Those pages are most likely well optimized, though.

I'm not earning big, but it's pulling in additional traffic from the search engines for me.

I use Squidoo mostly as an expansion of my main site.

As for the "Squidoo Slap", some of my lenses got slapped, but my most important lens still ranks on the front page for the main keyword, so I can live with that.

Absolutely awesome question! Is there anything that
anyone's begun using that they're finding out is as potent
    as Squidoo? Hubpages, or whatever?

Let the records show that theBryanMiller is saying this: if
anyone shares any info regarding this question posted
above, do not spam it, do not abuse it, follow the terms,
please. Increase the quality of these tools and services that
we all use to help boost our business. Please. Pretty please.
    With a cherry on top.

If there is a site, or anything anyone feels is beginning to
grow in popularity much like Squidoo is/once was, please
feel free to help us out in any possible way. But be sure to
describe the methods that are effective in quality terms,
    please.

Thanks you guys for your discussion, it's very very helpful!

I've been following the development of several 'squidoo'-like sites including

    www.zimbio.com
    www.hubpages.com
    www.gather.com
    www.launchtags.com

    The conclusion? Still Squidoo

    why?
Squidoo has the biggest name behind it (Godin)

The 'Slap' was detrimental, but in the past week or so, the decline has pretty much stopped and ground is slowly being regained.

I bet Squidoo has much deeper pockets than the others.

The recent changes will almost certainly result in more revenue generation instead of less because the 'spam' lenses have been reduced to an extremely minimal level and most have been knocked out of earnings.

My first post at the forum, nice to be here!

Squidoo can be used in a variety of ways. To bolster your own back links for your own sites or to use Squidoo itself to publish your own content and earn money.

The benefit and the appeal of using the site instead of having a blog is that you can do a "lens" (page) on any subject. With a blog it's best to stick to one theme or topic.

I also find a lot of encouragement and support from the Squidoo community (the official forum is squidu.com) which inspires me to write more.

I'm also a fan of Hubpages and Gather.

From what I've seen, Squidoo is best used in the same way articles directories are used: to gain one-way backlinks. Unless you've got one of the top lenses, chances are low that you'll make much of anything from Squidoo directly, but their lenses have traditionally ranked well with search engines, so you just have to include targeted links back to your site in the lens and you can increase the number of quality backlinks for your site.

Yep, never try to get a domain ranked from on the the free services. Instead use the free service domain to link to your own domains, to help them rank higher.

BTW why the hell can't I quote someone because it has a live link?

Quite frankly, I think squidoo is a waste of time. Sure, do you lens, but don't expect big things to come out of it.

    Hello,

I have around 20 personal and business related Squidoo lenses (under two different user names - not in violation of the TOS) and what they do provide is an easy way to create very specific "mini-websites" related to a few long-tail keywords related to my industry. I was effected by the "Google Slap", but my personal take was those lens that had good quality (key-word rich) content are doing just as well if not better than before. Only those lenses that I was lazy with and re-used copy from my main eCommerce Web sites have fallen off of the Google radar.

So, the long and short of it is having these Squidoo lenses provide me an opportunity to "own" a few specific long-tail keywords related to my niche industry which provides me with additional (and Google backlinking PR love) to my main eCommerce Web sites.

For those that might be interested, I did quickly create a "stand alone" lens to test to see if a well written "stand alone" lens could rise to the top of SERP's and generate any passive income.

I plan on providing limited "marketing" support in the realm of adding it to StumbleUpon, Delicious, etc. but keeping my time investment to an hour or two at the most. It will be interesting to see what sort of traffic it generates.

I have created mostly affiliate related lenses and hubs with some back linking to my content sites. Started just a couple of months ago, first with Squidoo and then with Hubpages. Results are: some traffic to my sites from both Squidoo and Hubpages, one affiliate sale from a hub and 3 or 4 Google clicks from Hubpages.

It is an experiment to run in between other work!
