I quit 5 years ago. Cold Turkey. Laid 'em down & never picked 'em up again. I smoked 1-2 packs a day for 25 years. Mostly Marlboro Full-Flavor(red pack) and Camel Lights, sometimes anything I could get. Wife of 17 years has never smoked and is in fact quite allergic to it. My first wife smoked also so I didn't have that problem with her. But deep down I knew I had to quit for several reasons:

    1) My wife's health. In addition to her being allergic, she also has 2 heart conditions.

    2) Nowhere to smoke anymore. Laws have banned it virtually everywhere indoors, and in most public places outdoors.

    3) Too expensive nowadays.

    4) My own health.

My family and friends were convinced that I would/could never quit. I really enjoyed smoking. As to quitting methods, I tried 'em all over the years - Patches, Gum, Guaranteed Stop-Smoking Plans, Hypnosis, and others that I can't remember. None of them worked. What finally worked for me was sheer willpower and determination.

I'm not going to say it wasn't hard. To be brutally honest, the first two months were a bitch. But as time went on, the cravings got less and less and now after 5 years I rarely think about it anymore. Occasionally I get a craving but they are very weak and only last for a second or two. One other thing which really helped in my case - a wonderful and caring spouse who has always been around to help beat the cravings.

Didn't mean to ramble, and I hope that this info can help someone else who really wants to quit. Stay cool.....

Anybody here interested in Quitting?

HAHAHAHAH - well, it's time this one quits. I bought a domain name for that purpose about a year ago, and kept saying....

"well, I'll quit when I get that website up."

Ha, ya it's been about a YEAR.

I had started a post in the WF about a year ago called appropriately "The Big Smoke Out." Out of that thread, we had some really awesome post, suggestions on how to quit, etc. A few of us actually quit, a few of us had no desire, and a few of us tried like heck and didn't quite make it. (That would be me.) I did OK for about the first 6 days, then I went and bought another pack.

But I learned a few things, including that it was very nice to not have to make sure I had cigarettes before I walked out the door - didn't have to buy any, things smelled much better, etc.

Plus I had this idea of taking all the money that I would have spent in cigarettes, and putting it into some kind of new online business, website - whatever. Use that cigarette money to build something new - and see how much I could make off of it. Course, that never happened either.

I'm ready to try it again, and set up a multi-blog type thing on that domain name. If anyone is interested let me know. It might get me moving a bit faster!

No, for last 15 years I didn't somke at all. In my highschool life I soked for a few times with my friends. But after highschool life, I never smoked again. It is a bad habit no doubt. Every year thousands of people died due to smoking. We should be aware of it.

    Ahhhhhh..................... my favorite subject! SMOKING!!

I smoked 2-packs a day for 32 years. Laid 'em down 3 years ago, bought some patches, toughed it out for a few weeks, and have never looked back!

Believe me, it's more "mental" than physical after a few days. Catching yourself reaching for your pocket without even thinking about it! Picking up a lighter and not even noticing it! Ya gotta retrain yer noggin ya see!

Anyhoo............... kudos to all who are trying to quit the nasty suckers!

    Mike
