Okay, there is some schools that label their students into different categories:

    1 Very Smart
    2 Smart
    3 Almost there
    4 Ok
    5-8 your an imbecil

These education systems tell you that its better for you to be labeled into one of these groups and receive that special extra education you need to make it to the next level... now it might seem like a good idea to give them that extra special attention but what is actually going on is:

Above groups insult and tell lower groups they are stupid because they cant get into higher groups. They laugh at them and insult them for being in these groups.

Even the teachers treat these students as if they were stupid... making them feel as if "i can't make it i just belong here and this is how it should be".

Im not just randomly writing this, I know this is happening because someone who is experiencing this told me. Im also not a psychologist I only had 1 college class on it but in my opinion:

    - Once you label someone into a group and keep telling them they belong there.. they will be stuck there.

i dont know if its just me but i think every student can achieve what they want, every human has the same potential... as long as they believe in themselves and dont have someone constantly reminding them that they are losers compared to someone who is already higher...

if i was to take this attitude id be calling myself an idiot because i dont have things like people in this forum do (you know the big salaries)

What are your opinions on this matter?

If thats really true then Im againts it.

Those classification lowers students self esteem. Then again it will depen on the teachers that will handle the class. If the teacher will tell the students that its not impossible to achieved the very smart class because we are all the same and doing your best is all that matters then it will help. But the problem will be the students that will surely make the student from classification 3-5 to consider useless(not good) :(

Even if the teachers are good (which in the school im talking about they are NOT), the other students from higher levels take the piss and put the others down, this wouldnt happen if they were all in the same class, with the same teachers....

Here are some points i like:

    * The criteria used to group kids are based on subjective perceptions and fairly narrow views of intelligence.
    * Tracking leads students to take on labels---both in their own minds as well as in the minds of their teachers---that are usually associated with the pace of learning (such as "slow" or "fast" learners). Because of this, we end up confusing students' pace of learning with their capacity to learn.
    * We associate students' placement with the type of learners they are and therefore create different expectations for different groups of students.
    * Once students are grouped, they generally stay at that level for their school careers, and the gap between achievement and levels becomes exaggerated over time. The notion that students' achievement levels at any given time will predict their achievement in the future becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I believe it was Mark Twain who said "Don't confuse going to school with getting an education." :)

My personal opinion is that one of these years the learning/education potential of the web is going to hand the educational establishment a real shock. Really, do you know of anyplace else where you could get the kind of education available from a study of posts here?

Education from experience has always been better than education from books.

Yeah I guess your right they should not do that to students. I think those student will look at it as a limitation not a challenge to their capacity:(

Well this suggestion mentioned above sounds a little extreme, but what's the alternative? Too be in a class where you can't work in the same tempo or be in a class where you can't stand the tempo of the others?

Well it's better to feel that you belong to the group which are stupid than be in an avarage class in where you are the most stupid.

Thats my impression of the school.

it would be better if you werent specifically labeled as the stupid ones.... you get me? I dont consider anyone stupid... for me there isnt such thing as stupid just the will to work and the will to be lazy. IF you try hard enough any human being is capable of achieving whatever they want... not if you have someone telling you you cant, though.

if you call someone stupid enough they will become stupid, even if they werent before you started. (talking about children /teenagers here)

I found in school that the kids who were the smartest were the ones who got made fun of the most. The teachers respected, but they got beat up all the time. But once a smart kid goes to college, everyone will suddenly be their best friend.

So you say that the stupid people should be kicked out of the school? Why not place them in own classes where they can study as fast as their classmates?

No what im saying is no one is stupid and everyone should be in the same classes with the same teacher without any special consideration.

Agree with latehorn, mainstreaming does not work. How would you feel to be in a class that requires the ability to read and you can't. Same is true of math. You can't teach a kid to factor that does not know multiplication tables. We can all get in over our head and if you are too far behind it is depressing.
