Unique content is definitely best. But content won't promote your site & get you followers; you've got to build backlinks. Try submitting articles to free article sites such as EzineArticles.com. Build backlinks to your site (and a few to your articles) such as bookmarks, forum/blog comments, guest blog posts, etc. Blogroll links are also awesome, especially if they're on a similar niche site.

i also used to think content is king..but now i think its mainly for regular readers..for google regular posting along wid promotion and SEO seems to work best for me

 

google looks for activity on your site - fresh content -and comes back more.
it looks for relevant content.
the content should produce links to your site organically
get backlinks to various different pages on your site.

i get a decent amount of traffic from article submission places - they have helped out my site and YES unique content does help

There's a lot of disagreement on this issue. I have heard that google is clamping down on sites with rubbish content, so a lot of autoblogs may be on the hit list. Personally I use unique content just in case they "bring down the hammer".

I launched a SITE few days before and with in a week i got pr 3, my domain is new so it all of because my content is unique and good.
