I can't remember the site but I had gone to a friends house and they had a laptop set up. I was asked if I knew how to use the internet and I said no and watched in amazement. Haha ... memories.

Exactly why I felt like asking, brings back memories.

So, thus far we have lots of search engines + porn, no wonder to this day these things remain popular on the net. And better yet, search porn sites, all in one.

Was yahoo a search engine first, or email provider, or both at the same time?

I think mine was Yahoo, back when they WERE the powerhouse. My sister showed me how to get on IRC before I ever visited a web page though, I think.

I like this question, but i dont remember. I was too busy chatting on AOL.

For those who remember, you should visit http://www.archive.org/web/web.php and visit the page as it was when you first saw it:

I think it was yahoo..and i think the browser was netscape..
back in 1996..i was in yr 8(first year of highschool here)..i was at library and a relative let me use last 10min of time alotted..i can remember the computer area being packed out as it was so new -the internet.
I can remember clicking links and just being a total noob. It frustrated the crap out me becuase somehow i ended up going in circles..i would end up back on home page when i wanted to go elsewhere..
remember all the crap ads that flashed and said "click here"?? Becuase so many links were saying click here ..i dunno talk about frustration..
I don't really remember the next time i went online..I think it was around 1999! during year 11 for researching an assignment. I knew windows pretty much inside out by then..although when i friend told me that to find something you need to go in a "roundabout" way to get what you actually need..i figured what crap. LOL

I can remember sitting in a yahoo chatroom in 2000 flirting and talking dirty to godknowswho with my best friend hahaha geez what idiots we were..
i think search engine then was yahoo and altavista and old ones.. I didnt use google until 2003 when i got my first computer at home, and online (dialup)..i have been addicted ever since !
In 03 or 04 i learnt to add scripts to irc..learnt in's and outs of setting up chatrooms..and spending alot of time in there..
I reckon by the end of the first year of being online i'd surfed hundreds of sites..
