Do you rely on search engines for traffic?

Most my 30k a day uniques come from gallery plug exchanges, I only get around 15k at most from SE's each month.

 

I think its generally the ideal scenario to get as little percentage of your traffic from SE's, i.e. most your visits come from bookmarks, ibl's.

Obviously you want to be performing well in the SE's but by being popular enough for your SE listing to only account for example 20% of your total traffic you are protected (to a degree) against getting a hammered if they take a dump on you after an algo change!

 

Yea I really need to get my SE traffic up. Think I just need more quality content.

 

I wouldn't want excessive traffic hits from spiders nor sites hotlinking my images.

 

I'm not sure if the risk of being "dumped" by the search engines for no reason is very real. All of my sites have always benefited from age and "changes" being made to Google and others; we are talking about 20+ sites here. I think that as long as you're not using black hat techniques (or other questionable techniques) that getting a lot of your traffic from SE's shouldn't be a problem, as the chances of you being dumped completely is not realistic.

Or has this happened to someone?

 

I think we'd have to define "dumped" first. Being banned is one thing, but being dropped in the SERPS, even a little, can mean a huge loss in income for many sites.

That's why I believe it's best, as Martaay states above, to limit our exposure to the SEs and their crazy dances. IMO the best way to limit exposure is to get as much traffic as possible from anywhere except the SEs. I try to look at the SEs as "frosting on the cake". Anything I get from the SEs is nice, and I optimize for them, but I don't want to rely on them for traffic.

Unfortunately the SEs are becoming so powerful it's impossible to ignore them. Heck it's impossible not to pander to them. That really irks me...

I don't depend on traffic from search engine. I just see that as a bonus. Only 2% of my traffic comes from traffic.

 

I have like 95% SE traffic
4% link/banner follow
1% typein

i have %80 search engine traffic from %95 gogle %5 yahoo and %15 traffic from other sites and backlink and finally %5 bookmark traffic. so i like google so much cause sent me daily 1000+ unique hits.
