I have not used Akismet in awhile but I was activating it on a new install of wordpress. I noticed that it wanted me to enter an API key (which I usually just got from wordpress.com and used it on my install of wordpress on my server). The link Akismet sent me to wants me to pay $5 a month of an API key? https://akismet.com/signup/ My question is can you still use the API key from your wordpress.com account for as many installations of wordpress on your own server for different sites? Do you now have to pay for Akismet?
isn't it free? i'm also using the same key to all my site and it works. and i'm pretty sure its free.
Yeah, now you have to. Earlier, if you had signed up for an account at wordpress it used to come with that. Now that is not the case!
I guess the change here is for newer licenses they are requesting for a payment. I use an old license key and it works great for all my websites. cheers Josh
I don't even use akismet it blacklists non spammers you can read about it on this post http://www.growmap.com/akismet-deleting-comments/ since I have started using another plugin called G.A.S.P I get very little spam
GASP is a very nice plugin and is talked about everywhere a lot. Not sure about the Akismet pricing, but I guess it is still free.
Thank you Roezer. The more bloggers are aware of the drawbacks to Akismet the more they are switching to G.A.S.P. I just checked the stats in the official WordPress plugin repository and the downloads are now up to 6,411. The best page for details on the plugin is available on the tab called G.A.S.P. in my blog. If anyone has questions they are welcome to contact me. (I can't give you the link since I'm new here - I even had to remove Roezer's link to get this comment approved.) There has been a lot of confusion over who has to pay to use Akismet but I haven't looked into it because I delete it is every blog I advise on.
As far as I know, you have to pay if your blog has AdSense or affiliate links. I disabled it some days ago, and changed it with its alternative.
