well I agree, its good to get a mix of both. you can't be cheap but you can;t be crazy and spend so much money if the link is valueless. Example I would never even take a free link if a page is not indexed by Google. It has no value. Rather than spending $300 a year to be in yahoo you could spend it on 50 directories and get permenant links.

quote "Because you can only get so many free backlinks" ? ? ? aren't their more free directories than paid ?

Ya thats what I was trying to say if mix up both then its worthy spending your money but if you are just spending hundreds dollars to get a good listing then its just a waste.

You can never discriminate a directory on the basis of free or paid listings it doesn't means that free directories are all useless.

My statement wasn't just about directories. Free one-way links in general, you will only get so many of them...and they require an enormous amount of time and commitment to build. Paying for links gets you far more links, better quality links, and in much faster time.

There are many people who do not spend any money whatsoever on building backlinks. I don't think this is wise. The old phrase "you get what you pay for" I think applies here. But to each his own. We had at least one person in this thread (who's sig suggest him to be an SEO-er) says investing any money in directories is worthless. Makes me wonder if he invests any money at all with his sites.
